So, my harddrive is about to die on me.

I have for a long time, been looking fo getting some kind of backup.

I think that getting a real server, is a too expensive solution. so i saw that Intel had this NAS RAID servers, that takes 4 drives.
Yet this is also quite expensive.
So if you were to get a very cheap backup server, that can stream media aswell, what would you get?

The cheapest i could find, was Intel Entry Storage System SS4000-E

That is way of what i want.
If i can get a cheap way of doing it, i will be having all my media, code, and other important files, on that drives, so all i have on my computer, basicly is Windows and its programs. Aswell as i can access my files from my laptop, which is usefull.

    The tetrastation looks cool.

I've got a linkstation and I don't use it nearly as much as I thought I would.   Problem I have with it is that it isn't RAID - how can I trust it??? TeraStation wouldn't have that problem, maybe I should have went for that.......

Its cool to have a drive you can access from any machine, but you still need a good backup program / schedule.

I'm now thinking that RAID is the best immediate backup and then the linkstation as scheduled for me...

I have a USB harddrive, that was supposed to be for backup.

But like you say - i dont trust a single harddrive. A harddrive is so complex, and unpredictable, that tomorrow, all my data could be lost.
Thus i dont want a server with anything but RAID. I want my data to be secure!

I might be going to get a full blown server.

Yet Windows 2003, and the harddrives, are gonna be the tricky part.

Where can you get Windows 2003 cheap(Im a student), and what harddrive to go for?

See if you (or your college/uni) is part of MSDNAA.

    Also look at

    http://thespoke.net/Software/

If you cant get MSDNAA, get can still get it cheap.

One problem with a server - noise, cost of power. Anyone ever had a problem with 24/7 machines?? I never like the idea of keeping my machine on 24/7.
