Was reading the following article and listening to a radio show, when I heard the announcement of the death of Reverend Jerry Falwell, may he rest in peace.

    The True Believer Revisited

"..Ironically, views not dissimilar were expressed by the Reverends Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson just days after the bombings, when the former stated that secularism, homosexuality, abortion and feminism had weakened the moral fiber of the nation and made it vulnerable to attack, as well as to God’s wrath. As Hoffer so well understood, True Believers think alike, regardless of the content of their thoughts..."

    Addendum:

"...Hoffer withdrew from the limelight in the early 1970s, after the bad experiences he had on the UC-Berkeley campus where, as a visiting scholar, he felt the student movement’s growing advocacy of violence only verified the claims he had made about the dangers of True Believers. He faded from the limelight, saying "Any man can ride a train. Only a wise man knows when to get off."

While I never met Eric Hoffer, I did see him one afternoon entering the Political Science department in Barrows Hall at Berkeley as I was leaving the Economics graduate student lounge down the hall.  I remember saying to myself--that is Eric Hoffer. Wish I had met him to tell how I had admired his books.

I’m more worried about seeing this thread go the way that quite a few on Digg have gone.

I can't say I always agreed with Jerry on some issues, but still, I'm sure he is with the Lord right now.

This is clearly the hatred and wrath of God upon him.  I know this because God himself told me.

Nope, God told me he sent him to hell.

I'm still busy mourning over Anna Nicole Smith's passing. The cultural-example of success she was. The vibrant supporter of our moral-backbone.

Anna truly did the world a service, whereas Jerry simply wasted his time convincing others to help the poor, be compassionate to the weak, and give of themselves all that we can...

Sorry Jer Jer, should have objectified yourself, had sex with dozens of people, and married an old billionaire for his mullah if you wanted to leave an impression on the world.

    Long-live the Legacy Of Anna!

And uh, why would God share that information with you anyway? Besides, according to Scripture all one has to do is believe and they are saved. Therefore, assuming Jerry believed, well...

Well DoomBringer, you have something in common with President George W. Bush.

    Is it a Party line?

I thought you were a Socialist Democrat or Democratic Socialist, whatever? Perplexed

That is one possible interpretation of the Bible.  Mr. Falwell was an extraordinarily hateful person in life and used religion for personal monetary gain.

God tells me these things because, uh, I dunno.  I asked nicely?  We're totally BFF?

He is neither in heaven nor hell.  He's in a morgue right now, and he'll be in the ground a bit later.

    And that's where he'll stay.

Too bad, cuz it would be fun to be able to point out how wrong he was about the whole 'afterlife' thing, but since it's not real, he's just dead.

    Nothing more.  Nothing less.
