Why is the Vista Photo Import Wizard so bad?

here's something that's annoyed me for a while now....

    What's wrong with this image?
    <img src="http://www.winsupersite.com/images/showcase/winvista_ff_photogallery_acquire.jpg">

There's NO way to select which images you want to transfer. It just takes all the images on the card and dumps them into the Pictures folder. It was bad enough that in XP you had to click on the checkbox for EACH image but now in Vista you can't do anything.
I've never seen anyone want to transfer ALL their photos from a card all at the same time and put them all into the same folder. People just don't use their cameras that way.

I deal with real people every day and I know that IE, the picture viewer, the printing wizard and the camera transfer wizard are the only tools built into Windows that these people interact with on a regular basis (of course they also use Explorer but they don't know that).
To the average clueless user, this is something that's extremely important to their experience when using an OS and will just end up annoying them.
It might not seem important to us geeks who just browse to the memory card and copy and paste photos from it but most people aren't geeks and deserve to have a wizard that's actually helpful.

This is a case of an attempt to make something more simple by taking away features but ending up making the tool pretty much useless.

The photo import wizard (or whatever it's called now) either needs the good old fashioned MS Power Toy treatment or to be fixed in SP1.

    Who's responsible for this tool?
Did they even test it out on regular everyday users?

I like the import wizard.  I have it set up so that when I dock my camera and press the "USB" button, vista sees the pictures, imports them automatically, and then deletes the pictures from the camera.  That's all I want.  I tag and delete at a different time.

I'm actually pretty happy with the new Import Wizard since it can sort all the photos in folders based on their date.

however, if MS added a way to allow selections of single photos other than an automatic import (and maybe also a way to mark photos so that they will never get selected again), it would have been much better since there are instances where importing all the images isn't a wise idea: for example on nokia phones there are often system images that are used by themes or applications and the import wizard could mess up with them when you enable automatic image deletion.

Windows Live Photo Gallery (BETA) has a brand new import wizard that does just what you want, much more usefull and well worth a try!

Did you spend a little too much time under the sunbed?

I wonder if MS is going to include all the improvements they did in the live versions of Windows Mail and Windows Photo Gallery in Vista's SP1 since the versions now present in vista look pretty... "basic".

I cannot speak about SP1 because we have not announced anything yet (apart from a release date), but considering that Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Gallery are still in beta... well, you can make your own conclusions here Smiley

And by that do you mean that MS is forever doomed to not be able to include anything truly useful with the OS because of US laws?

Like I said, it's perfect for something like to old PowerToys. They weren't included with the OS so you had to download them separately but they where useful and free.

Hmm, I'll have to try that.

That's because you know what you're doing.
Most people I deal with have no clue how to make new folders and rename stuff. The whole point of a wizard is to make it easier but in the case of Photo Transfer Wizard it just leads to confusion.
