That version of Windows after Vista will be called...

    "Windows 7"

According to Mike Nash of the Windows Vista Blog.

    Mike Nash said:

As you probably know, since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7."  But now is a good time to announce that we've decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7."

    ...

The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity

Now we know why MS didn't go ahead w/ that $300 million Vista campaign.

It makes sense since "Vista" has been poisoned. Maybe they could've saved "Mojave." Nah. I think "7" is good. It's a good decision to start a new brand. Who doesn't love a lucky 7?

    YES! (pumps fist)

I hope this decision to keep it simple extends to the "edition-itis" that afflicts Vista. One client version, maybe two at the most should be enough.

WOW!  I didn't think they would do it...

No problems here. Simple, to the point.

I might add that this seems to be a strong signal for the enthusiats. We all got used to the term Windows 7 (I personally love the name). We were also excited abou Longhorn, Indige, Avalon, ... and all the other code names.

But what usually happened was that the cool names were always taken away from us. Now it seems as if Microsoft is making a strong move with keeping the name and keeping the excitement up!

Does this mean the actual version will be incremented as well?  Because it would be silly to call it Windows 7 and have it be version 6.1.

I do hope they change the version number to match. Having Windows NT 6.1 with the name Windows 7 would just be confusing. Not like that's stopped MS before, but one can hope they've learned from their mistakes.

It's also going to be a bit hard to explain it to consumers who aren't aware of the version numbers. They're going to say, "after Windows 3 there was 95 (4), 98 (5), Me Devil, 2000 (7) XP (8), Vista (9), so it should be Windows 10". No use telling them that 98 was 4.1 and Me was 4.9, and that 2000 was 5.0, and XP 5.1. And that's be even more weird if Windows 7 is actually numbered 6.1...
