Homicidal rampages are much more fun. And I have a list, if you need one.

the ui i probably will - the theme and graphics i wont Wink

    Setup

Needed to convert to ntfs – did so.  Whole computer took like 10 seconds.  I have read there is little difference between the systems except for the extra security.  Can we not have a button to switch back and forth? ( I thought the conversion would take hours)

    Part one – 3 minutes

    First re-boot

    “installing windows …  ( says 15 min…

Maybe... maybe not... (I was hoping somebody would catch that. Wink )

Jamie: did you format as NTFS or convert to NTFS. There's a rather big difference. Conversion takes a long time, as all the file structures of FAT need to be rewritten in the NTFS way, while formatting just writes an empty file table.

NTFS and FAT are very different. FAT is a simple index of which clusters belong to which file. This index is kept twice so it can be recovered in the case of failure, but this is a very unreliable process, especially since any data that was in transition during failure can't be recovered, and sometimes you don't know which of the copies is correct, and sometimes they both get damaged. NTFS on the other hand is much more. The Master File Table is also an index of clusters, but a very different one. For one thing, its size is variable, which allows better support for large partitions, and more efficient usage of disk space. It keeps the directory tree in an index, which allows for faster searching. Every change that is made to the file system is done as an atomic transaction. If something goes wrong before the transaction finishes, the file system can be rolled back to the state of before the transaction without further damage, which is why it's more reliable. Besides just the name and file blocks it keeps security descriptors for each file, which makes it more secure. It allows files to be compressed or encrypted transparently without an application needing to know about it. It allows for a single file to consist of multiple streams of data. It allows for additional file systems to be mounted at arbitrary points in the structure. It allows logical volumes to span multiple physical disks.

FAT and NTFS are nothing alike, except in that they both store files, in the same way that a horse and carriage and a Concorde are both modes of transportation.

everyone who comes to this site should have received a link from MS in the mail so we can discuss it

i have no sympathy for ms trying to stop it

    "Dear fellow c9er

Feel like loading an incomplete, graphically challenged test OS? You do? Great! Click here.

Discuss it in the forums - we are watching!

are you saying they emailed links to download LH 5048 to everybody on C9?

I never got a link like that? I wouldn't consume the bandwidth for it since i don't use the software, but I would still like to know.

    more like a joke....

That's not a good idea. Read the release notes: you should only install on a clean partition. You can't upgrade, and installing it straight over an existing Windows installation is going to leave a mess, if it works at all.

well so far after 15 min im locked out of windows haha

all i did was join the network and reboot - log in - then blue screen

i can get in via safe mode

will try saying - no network

  • User profile image
    jamie

    haha

    so... formating - re-installing

almost all the networking has been ripped out
cannot change workgroup name in sfae mode ( grayed out)

    no network neighbourhood
under network connections - advanced, network identification and tools do not do anything

probabyly easier to just load it again...

    hang on

i let it wipe everything - all ntfs - format c this time

..but i doubt that has much to do with joining a workgroup

    edit - multiple start menus

when i get back in ill post a screen shot - they sort of have added this

when you click all programs now - theres no flyout - and the programs appear where most frequently used programs are

interesting - but my 3 tab idea is better ;P

** they also dont work in this build = click adobe group nothing happens
