Yahoo news article: Chinese Target Web's 'Prohibited Language'

This whole issue of censorship of the internet on a national level would be hilarious if it weren't for the fact that it illustrates the lengths some governments will go to in order to keep their population in ignorance. But Pandora's box has been opened, and they will not close it again easily. Whether it is China, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, or any other country, the exposure to free thought will do more to spread liberties than any foriegn policy. Even in western democracies the huge number of news sources available today has led to a greater understanding different societies.

Maurits, you should modify your C9 Profanity Filter program in the Sandbox to be usable by different regimes.  Exclude such words as:

    freedom
    democracy
    overthrow
    revolution
    human rights
    constitution
    capitalism
    anything to do with religion
    hope

    Then add:

    Steve Jobs
    Lotus
    Open Source
    Linux

    Wait, I digress...

Update... Bennett Haselton of Peacefire.org figured out how Chinese users can make a new MSN Spaces blog without filtering

    English instructions
    Taiwanese instructions

    EDIT: correct "Chinese" to "Taiwanese"
