C9 just tweeted that it's a Kinect event.

Well, mystery solved. Damn, I'm going to miss it. When will it be available on demand?

Yes! Within about 24 hours of this broadcast, all materials will be downloadable on @ch9.

Great, I might actually have a reason to get that Kinect out of the box then. Tongue Out

Just wanted to say Thanks to Channel 9 and Microsoft Research for the live event. Enjoyed it very much and some great demos.

Well, I've installed it, and have been able to determine two things:

    1. The Kinect I got at Mix actually works.
    2. My apartment is far too small to use a Kinect.

Due to the second point, I find it unlikely that I'll be doing much with this. It's still cool, though.

@Sven Groot:There is an addon for the lenses which makes it useable in smaller spaces (think it was announced at E3).  It was from a 3rd party I think.

That's the Nyko Zoom. I imagine it's not perfect though. Microsoft must've experimented with similar lenses and passed on them for some reason. Still, I imagine it could work well in some scenarios.

Could someone please explain what's the deal with all these kinect videos where it's being hacked to control: video games like WoW, browsers, and whatnot. Is anyone browsing the web with hand gestures!?

The only useful video I saw, was of a doctor controlling his PC with his hands, which must be kept sterile. In that context it's useful, as it saves him the need to type and wash his hands afterwords. Otherwise, IMO these video look lame. But having never tried it, I may be wrong.

@fanbaby I think the deal is that not everyone here is a grown up.

When I was using it in a course project last semester, I manually scaled raw hand tracking deltas to make it easier to adjust for a user's distance. I haven't looked at the SDK yet, but do you not have the ability to calibrate the tracking environment (or get environment data from the sensor to be used for app level adjustments)?

I gotta say, kudos to the teams at MSR and C9 for putting all this stuff together. I watched the live show last night and am following the quickstart videos now... I havent even had to glance at the API reference yet, which I was dreading. Amazingly informative.
