    Greetings Niners

For those of you who are not on the Twitters or have no interest in joining for the purposes of submitting questions to Channel 9 Live.... please feel free to use this thread instead.

The Channel 9 Live schedule has been posted: Day 1 is here and Day 2 is here.

You are welcome to submit questions in advance however I would recommend waiting until you have watched the Keynote presentations first (as there may or may not be interesting stuff announced *wink* *wink*).

Please use this format when asking your question:

    @<guest's name> - <your question>

    Example:

@Scott Guthrie - I heard a rumor that your trademark red polo is actually a white polo that went through the wash with a pair or red sock... IS THIS TRUE?

And if you do choose to use Twitter (it's free and only takes 30 seconds to sign up) please include the #ch9live hashtag in your tweet.

    Cheers -Nic

    @Scott Guthrie - http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/03/25/441074.aspx

At MIX 06 you had such high hopes for ASP.NET powering one of the biggest social networks on the internet. MySpace is now 71st in the world (actually today it's 77th) - http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/myspace.com

You even had stacked the company with Microsoft execs like Hemu Nigam et al. just to make it that much more Microsofty.

    What happened?

Why this requiem for an ASP dream? Are you aware of the kind of constant and annoying errors users were getting on a daily basis due to the technology decisions you had boasted about in that telling blog article from early 2006?

He actually boasted about 4 different sites, and three of them are still amongst the top trafficked sites according to the site that you linked. In fact, 5 of top 26 sites are running on Windows Server and IIS:

    7. live.com (hotmail.com)

    11. msn.com

    21. bing.com

    25. ebay.com

    26. microsoft.com

And a 6th, yahoo.com at #4, is partly powered by a Microsoft stack.

@cbae: Please don't derail my question. For the record, Yahoo caches mapped index dumps, and does not pull results from Bing live. They serve the results from a database local to Yahoo. I was on a dev team with somebody at Yahoo a while back.

    http://www.bing.com/developers/s/API%20Basics.pdf

I think they get the results via dedicated application servers MS set up for them, then they cache them locally at central server and serve them back out to the edge servers which have them memcached for hit/miss delivery. On the web side they run free open source edge servers under the Apache project:

    http://trafficserver.apache.org/

Oh, and Yahoo's biggest web app is mail, not search. So it really doesn't make your point either way.

Ebay runs Apache Coyote in front of load balanced Java Tomcat servers

in the PDC10 silverlight app there was a box I can submit questions directly from it, that works fine for me, actually got some questions answered.

Got one for the @ScottGu, kind of a long one so im posting it here

The new 3d stuff and SL5 features are cool but once again WPF is playing catch up Sad Ever since silverlight first came out microsoft has said that is was going to be a subset of the full framework, yet this never seems to happen.

SL keep getting new features not available in WPF. WPF do get some of them but like a year later, and by that time some new feature has been added to SL

Is there a reason why you dont release these new SL apis as external libraries for .net as well? After all isnt the api pretty much the same? Why not do that with the whole SL BCL? (minus the parts that directly overlap with the .net BCL)

That would make things so much easier also also not make .net/wpf developers like my self feel like chumps

Maybe this question will be obsolete after the keynote.. i hope so, but i kinda think it will be even more relevant :/

    -edit-

well, wrong i was not. what about the profiler, the xna integration, xaml debugging, and all the other stuff for the full framwork?

  • felix9

@Scott Guthrie - will there be some builtin solutions for the INPC (INotifyPropertyChanged) problem ?

    http://10rem.net/blog/2010/12/16/strategies-for-improving-inotifypropertychanged-in-wpf-and-silverlight

  • figuerres

@ScottGu or anyone who can answer:  will we have a SSRS client control for Silverlight V5 ?

if no then what is the plan? when will the SSRS and Silverlight Teams fill in this missing part that we need for real LOB applications?

  • Ian2

@Scott Guthrie Do you think it would be theoretically possible to create a tool to assist Silverlight devs to bring code across to HTML5? (this would be a cool thing to be able to do)

  • Dovella

    PDC September or October ?

    PDC September or October ?

Already been talked about in the keynote.

The next MSFT developer conference will be September 13-16, 2011 in Anaheim, CA.

Note it's not being called a PDC though.

  • felix9

    @Scott Guthrie - will SQLCE4 get official ASP.NET membership support ?

  • aL_

having some serious buffering issues with the sream right now so im posting here

    @scottgu:

is the EF4.1 and new SQLCE +tooling also available for desktop .net apps? if not, why and when?

  • aL_

so you're pretty much going to ignore all these questions arent you.... 10 minutes of Gu left..

    -edit-

    Yep, all ignored. thanks.

I cant stress enough how extremely frustrating it is to not get any information about the wpf vs silverlight position at microsoft..

To be and i think a large portion of devs out there it seems like youre letting wpf slip into a legacy technology and positioning SL as the premier development solution for most apps.

Yes, VS and expression is written partially in wpf, but they also use a load of com and native, other platforms that you're not exactly placing as first class citizens of your dev story. Yes, there are lower level features that is only available in wpf, but that just makes the situation even more painful since you're always missing features you want regardless of the platform.

i will say this though, if the community/customers is not already feeling wpf is beeing killed, not adding support for the xaml debugging will certainly do it..

    i
    am
    disappoint.

@aL_: I'm sorry that you are dissappoint......

If you submit a question that doesn't get asked live on the air then there are a few possible reasons why:

    1) We missed your question due to a flood of retweets/spam/other questions
    2) We ran out of time (there were a lot of questions for The Gu)
    3) There's no answer for your question (yet). By this I mean, you've possibly asked a question where a decision has yet to be made, locked in on confirmed and therefore our guest can't give you a definite response.

We're doing our best to address all incoming questions

  • aL_

i was specifically talking about the questions in this thread though.. none of them got in there and i dont think your points apply to any of the questions in this thread

i got a alot of questions in and thats cool, but i think that alot of important questions got overlooked, some asked by me and some by others

    -edit-

btw i wanna make it clear that im dissapointed at microsoft in general for not beeing clearer on these SL vs Wpf issues. (its kinda hard to be mad at the Gu though) i dont blame c9live for that Smiley

you did miss quite a few questions though but thats off topic for this thread Wink
