So, Charles doesn't like writing good metadata eh?

Scroll down past "Zune, Y U NO FIND MY STUFF?"
I'm just assuming it's C9 Charles who made this video considering it says C9 in the filename.

My Sansa Clip + is similar to the Zune software in that it completely relies on Metadata. If there is no ID3 tag on an MP3 it won't show up anywhere unless you browse by folder which comes in handy for people who are too lazy to check if their MP3 files have correct ID3 information.

Haha, I can often notice Charles editing a post for several times to make a descriptive title for an interview, unfortunately video files cant be edited as easily. Big Smile

I agree that Zune is the biggest piece of crap software Microsoft has ever made. On my pc Windows Media Player loads instantly but starting Zune takes at least 20-30 seconds. It has less features than WMP and it's slower with blurry interface, why does this thing exist?

@ZippyV: What mystifies me even more is the number of people that say they like it and use it daily, people are quite perplexing in their choices.

Design-wise it is great, and very attractive, but it is as slow as an application can be. Probably the slowest running app in Microsoft

@ZippyV: It starts up in 1.5 seconds for me, about the same time it takes to start up WMP. I use Zune because I have to, and because it's tied to the Zune marketplace. If I just want to view a video outside of my media library, I just use Media Player Classic which starts up almost instantaneously.

It takes a ridiculously long time for me. I mostly use it because it's pretty. Smiley

Any news on what they're doing WMP in Win8? They metrofied it for the start screen, but will the actual application have metro-style? They might as well just call it Zune and release an update to the actual Zune software that adds all missing functionality.

There's an embargo on all Win8 related talk in Seattle at the mo. Wait till after the beta and then people will start to talk Smiley

My laptop grinds to a halt when Zune is running in full screen mode.

Again, this kinda stuff makes people feel helpless. A big slow company wants to get into the phone market and we all see what needs to be done. In this case it's making a desktop client that works well for everyone (it shouldn't be hard to make something better than iTunes because it's one of the worst apps ever created) YET there doesn't seem to be any effort being put into it.

If 9ers would like to help make it better, where would they turn?

I know this has nothing to do with Charles and his metedata but I guess that's what this thread has turned into.

@dentaku: I use the Zune software because it has podcasts and syncs to my phone. The interface is confusing for doing anything more than playing media.

@dentaku: Smiley Indeed, I don't add metadata to video files. I've honestly never done so in all my time on Channel 9. Interesting that it's taken so long to point this out. In this case, yes, that's my interview (recorded in the C9 studio and not edited by me - if it was, it would have had no metadata...).

"Eureka" was the project code name for VS11's Page Inspector. Oops...

Are you asking for us to add meaningful metadata to our video files (easy enough to do in most modern editing applications)? Seems like a reasonable request to me. Sorry about the ~9 years of mostly-absent embedded video file information.

@Charles:I  don't use the Zune softare so it doesn't matter to me.

@dentaku: Hmm. I don't follow why you created this thread then. I mean, you're saying it's not about lacking metadata in C9 video files and further you just don't care anyway. What am I missing?

    Jekyll and Hyde?

@Charles: It was a rant about the zune desktop software, all eyes turned to Charles for not properly supplying metadata (for the past 9 years Wink). The metadata is actually allready there. It's just not attached to the file itself. But I wouldnt want to update the metadata of 60.000 episodes with 6 different file formats. Maybe we can put our heads together and create something like a queryable dataservice that supports an open metadata framework?

I posted it just to show that Mister Godcat was annoyed by this situation (like I said, it really doesn't matter to me). He would like better metadata but I guess what was most important to him was his rant about how Zune could be improved and I just found it funny that one of the screenshots showed that it was someone named Charles who made a video with no descriptive metadata and that he maybe didn't know who Charles was but us 9ers would.

    Thanks. I understand now. Smiley
