the guy who created the old Wing Commander games is back with a new game that will be like a new wing commander game but also an online MMO sort of universe.

    This one looks good.

I never played Wing Commander, but I liked Independence War 2 for having a decent flight model. The X-Wing vs Tie series was good because Star Wars, but the physics was terrible.

I'm waiting for the Elite rewrite to complete.

Interesting. Elite and Star Citizen both pulled away from Kickstarter after their initial campaign. Kickstarter is apparently too expensive once you reach a certain scale.

I'm waiting for a new version of Tie Fighter, which I think was the best of the X-Wing series of games. Great story and really fun to play. X-Wing:Alliance had the better graphics but there was just something really cool about flying alongside Darth Vader.

Looking forward to Elite too. Spent many a Saturday moving cargo between systems and then shooting up space-stations to get the police after me so I could get more combat.

@Michael Butler: I completely agree with you. TIE Fighter Collector's CD-ROM is the best PC game ever. It really started my interest in PC gaming. I even made my own levels.

I never got into the Wing Commander games, but I seem to recall Mark Hamill played one of the characters. The last space flight simulator I played was EVE Online. It was fun, but I don't have the time for an MMO.

The first ones did not have the video and voice stuff the way the later ones did.

they also had Malcolm McDowell and John Rhys-Davies and others do live acting in front of green screens to insert into the game.

Yep, I saw this last year (I think) and was pumped until the MMO part.  The MMO dynamic tends to turn fun into a job for me, but YMMV.  3VE was awesome until I was getting chewed out by a highschool senior for not spending enough time mining.

I think the way CR is putting this together will not be like other MMO systems.

they have said that this will not be about level grinding.

the term they use for it is PU  as in Persistent Universe.

it's all still evolving and I see a lot of folks who have been with the idea for a while so I think the folks who will be playing will be a different crowd; more folks interested in exploring and co op play than in pvp / level grind stuff.

Plus, it's supposed to have a Wing Commander-like single player campaign too so you don't have to deal with the MMO parts.

Star Citizen - the online part

Squadron 42 - the single player part

I'm looking forward to EVE Valkyrie for the Oculus Rift.

Star Citizen will also require crazy good hardware apparently. They aren't messing around with the graphics.

Yup, I backed it when it was on Kickstarter.  I've stopped following the dev blogs, but there seems to be no end of content coming out of RSI.  Definitely looking forward to it!

I wonder if they get the same EMM386 Memory manager error when you exit the application. HEX edited to read "Thank you for playing Wing Commander." [1] :)

We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.

edit: after playing this, it's highly probably that playing other space sims will feel "weak sauce". I'm not saying there's a correct order but if I was introducing someone to space sim genre I'd recommend this kind of order WC1/2->SC->P1/2->WC3/4->XW/TF->DF/FS->FL/TTF/IWAR/E->modern games (well, it might be best to play some modern games prior to playing I-War as otherwise it'll feel like progress is going backwards)

Grab I-War 1 from GOG or ebay otherwise even posting in a topic about "wing commander-like space combat / flight sims" just makes me not feel but make faces like in that avatar to the left of this wall of text cut short. It's playable without a joystick but I wouldn't even try. There's also some "mission impossible" type of missions. I couldn't get past one without editing the timer in the script since it seems like the time was running too fast atleast on my computer.

I've tried to keep up with all the games that've come in the genre since and unless I missed something, I'm not aware of anything comparable that has come out since.

and as far as production values go, it's still very playable and doesn't feel too dated.

Here's some notes I found if you can't get it to run...

    1. Check that DEP is disabled for IWar.exe (if you have enabled it for all apps by default)

    2. Disable Desktop composition and display scaling on high DPI settings from the shortcuts properties Compatibility tab. (this makes video/animation smoother)

    3. If you want to start it without the intro/logos, modify the shortcut to start it with:
    IWar.exe -b -16 -800x600
otherwise it won't use the glide wrapper and will crash.

    4. Disable Star field blur in options. (optional: -nozlock can fix screenshot problems)

Use just -w alone to run it in window. (most compatible as doesn't use hardware)
