I organize the icons on my desktop, to only later spin the mouse wheel and make everything huge. Once they're huge, if you shrink them back down the form into little grids.

Is that specific to particular OS or OS+Mouse setup?

I'm not even bothering to check anything beyond Windows 7 for my desktop use for a while. Even if all the UI issues were fixed, I found enough compat. breaking changes in few hours of testing 8 that I suspect it'll be Windows 9 or 10 before all that's fixed if it ever will be. The very first thing I tried to install on Windows 8 had issues during installer, suggesting  there were major under the hood improvements and regressions. There was also presentation on C9 which said that certain legacy things are removed that were used in old games. Though recently I learned that even Nvidia is breaking old games since the 6xx/7xx Geforce or possibly even Fermi (negative LOD bias clamp not working - though I saw one suggestion that using a special tool on each broken game might fix it). And I didn't see DVI-I (for CRT use) in the latest AMD.

If a PC can't run atleast Doom, Quake 1/2, Battlefield 1942, TMNF just as when they were released (1:1 pixel colors and same or better responsivity) then it's no good for my gaming needs. I have seen some screenshots which suggest glide has much better rendering, presumably because the artists targeted that API during development - the games may work on Nvidia but they don't look as good. Good thing I have my original Voodoo 1 so I can use as a reference to check emulation color/texture/filtering accuracy (dosbox should get Glide support eventually).

@androidi: It's been around forever. Goto your desktop, hold the control key down and spin your mouse wheel. It will either make the icons very large or small, depending on the scroll direction.

It seems kind of limiting to keep icons on a grid. People don't keep things on a real desktop in some strange artificial grid. So why can't I just place things where I would like?

EDIT: Are the video links broken?

It would drive me nuts if my desktop icons didn't line up.

Are you saying you have align to grid off turned off and it still realigns when zooming in/out?

@MarkDeFalco: If you make your icons really super big, and then make them small again, they don't end up in the same spots. They cluster into groups of a 6th of the screen.

I'll try to make a video on monday.
