@W3bbo: It's almost seeming to me that the default layout should have the ribbon minimized, and have the top ten commands in the QAT with it set to show below the ribbon. That way you would have a "Command Bar" type row of icons to provide easy access, and hide it when the ribbon is shown.
That kinda misses the point of the ribbon, which is to provide the most commonly used together commands in a discoverable, large icon, and descriptive text form. It also misses the point of the QAT, which is to provide a place for the user to put often used commands that might not be optimally located in the default UI (something that is likely to be a different set of commands for different people).
You might as well just go back to a traditional menu and tool bar arrangement with those defaults.
