Microsoft ends charade - "Home" users get full patch support

Woohoo, finally some common sense from Redmond after a long hiatus: "Home" versions of Vista and Win 7 (including ├╝ber-expensive "ultimate" editions) will get the same support as the business versions.

    http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1059116-microsoft-extends-support-for-windows-vista-until-2017/page__pid__594668366#entry594668366

This article talks about Vista, but Win 7 Home is extended too:

Finally. I've said it already that this policy made no sense whatsoever. It was sort of ok when the consumer and professional versions were separate (9x/NT), but with the unification that came with XP, this policy is completely senseless. Patches for XP/Vista/7 Pro work the same way on the home versions too. The only way to enforce this police would have been blocking Home users from Windows Update or just not shipping patches to home versions, despite the patches being already made, since they would be still available for Pro. Not to mention the fact that ultimates cost more than business versions and would get the shaft anyway. The PR shitstorm for such a system would be catastrophic.

Finally a sensible decision from MS - signs and wonders.

Given this trend, maybe Metro could be made usuable for something other than fart apps and twitter cliens as well in the near future?!

It did (sort of) make sense with Vista, given that the "Home" versions had features not in the business versions (Media Center etc), although I imagine the real sticking point was whether Ultimate shouldn't be considered a Business version or not. It doesn't make any sense with Win7 though, given that versions were strict supersets.

This is a step in the right direction. Now we just need to move towards one SKU. There's no reason to separate Home and Professional anymore.

Congratulations beer, once again you've stood up to the man, proved Microsoft wrong and saved the world from those rascals at Microsoft HQ. Now go take your medicine.

Beer was actually spot-on here. Cut him some slack.

If we all believed in unicorns and fairies the world would be a better place.

Thanks, man. It's a warm, fuzzy feeling knowing that I can provoke responses like these from Fanboys and Freetards on the same forum.

I must be doing something right.
