Why do you need an image when really you can do it in 2 CSS3 properties?

Nice. Even back then someone realised it was strange something that represented a window should be displayed as a flag.

The old (Win 3x - 2k) Windows logo used to remind me of a 35mm film negative, for some reason...

Perhaps 'new look' is a bit overstated?

Microsoft's new logo announced Thursday looks a lot like an image used in two
commercials in the '90s for Windows 95.

Well, it is also pretty much the logo of the Microsoft store (online and offfline)

I actually don't like it. It looks like another version of Windows or Visual Studio.

Why not have the corporate logo be something unique to Microsoft as a software creator that has many products, other than Windows, Office and Visual Studio?

As Microsoft is the root of all Windows software, why not using something like a Glass Prism with white light (software ecosystem as a whole) going in and the 4 colours that is liked so much (the modern computing lifestyle we enjoy) coming out?

Without Microsoft (the prism) there would be no rainbow to enjoy.

I find the new Microsoft and Windows logos slightly too unimaginative and (excuse me) boring. They are very Metro-style though. The other logos in the video look better in my oppinion. The minimalistic nature of Metro in and of itself is quite nice though.

Speaking of which - Channel 9 could use a little Metro update (although it's in the ballpark, so to speak).

What would a Metro niner guy look like? A flatlander? Could actually be fun to play with.

Going by the old video that Ian posted, the panes of the old windows logo represented the different applications you could run simultaneously. Pre-emptive multitasking was the single most significant feature of Windows 95 IMHO.

If you look at how they're rebranding the product lines, each pane of the new Microsoft logo seems to represent an aspect of the business:

    • blue = Windows
    • red = Office
    • green = Xbox
    • orange = (I suppose) everything else

IOW, Microsoft as a company has morphed itself into its single most successful product, Windows, and like Windows, Microsoft as a corporation can "multitask".

If you look at the current branding, it appears that, yes Windows is still blue and XBox green, but Office is the Orange Red colour and maybe the Yellow is the dot on "i" in Bing?
