Last month I created a post referring to Microsoft's new design changes for the next Visual Studio. The reaction from most people here, and a sentiment I also share, was that the ALL CAPS menus had to go.

Well Microsoft has thought it over and decided styling Visual Studio to in some ways fit in better with the metro look is more important than our opinions. Read more here:

My take: Visual Studio should be a friggin' IDE meant for programming ease and comfort. But I guess Microsoft sees it differently. They use updates to Visual Studio is to herd developers in the direction Microsoft wants them to follow i.e. Metro apps on the Microsoft app store.

I'm actually amazed at how angry people get over this. When I saw it, I thought it looked weird, and then stopped noticing it after about ten minutes or so. But fortunately, now we have another thread about it and can enjoy a few dozen more hilariously sarcastic all-caps replies.

Holy oversimplification of the blogpost batman. Also, they're adding an option to customize the casing. Because they don't care about your opinion.

    You missed this part:

"That said, we will enable you to customize the casing..."

That's how the things are handled on the internets.

I saw a few tweets about a registry setting you can use to change the menu casing back to "normal".

Anyways, I'd like to see a Smart Glass enabled version of VS2012 Smiley

Maybe have my test runs on a separate device, phone or tablet, Class diagram automatically sync on a tablet. One problem I have with development is I leave the desktop for too long and it takes me a while to figure out where I left off on a project. Having access to parts of a project on a mobile device would be handy for me for frequent review, refreshing my memory, and ideas development.

Sure, but they got over it the right way: by beating the crap out of each other.

@sysrpl:Really? Again? "Oh my F'n Gosh Darn, they moved my Cheese!!!!!"

At least there was an attempt at making a salient argument about the color changes when folks claimed (without evidence) that the lack of visual cue from the colors would make them less efficient. Where is there any argument other than "I don't like it" in this topic? Should I start a thread about how I don't like the color purple? Or how I think green beans taste awful?

And where is the evidence that removing the colors makes it more efficient? Change does come at an expense (both in re-learning the app and the cost of making the change in the first place) and it doesn't need to be for something so absurdly arbitrary like icon colors or menu casing.

Here's my favorite part of the blog:

We've chosen to use uppercase styling in the top menu for two main reasons: 1) to keep Visual Studio consistent with the direction of other Microsoft user experiences, and 2) to provide added structure to the top menu bar area.

On the first point, the use of uppercase text is becoming a strong signature element of styling for navigation and headings in Microsoft user interfaces. You can see it in the Azure Portal, in Zune, and in the latest Bing search results update.

Consistent with what??? The Zune app is dead and the remaining apps they sited are not desktop apps. If upper-cased menus are the "new cheese" then they better ship W8 with notepad with upper-cased menus too.

Thank god they are going to make this optional which makes all of this moot.

If we all believed in unicorns and fairies the world would be a better place.

And where's MS' argument that making everything dark is better for your productivity? "I don't like it" is a perfectly good argument. I don't know why MS doesn't just ship skins/themes for VS and be done w/ this argument. I have to say, the current design looks better. The dark skin was just horrid. VS is not Expression Blend.

I think green beans tastes great, so you must be an idiot.

At least the menu is still there, not auto-hide or completely removed or do extra miles to make sure it is removed. So, it is better than nothing.

Leaving WM on 5/2018 if no apps, no dedicated billboards where I drive, no Store name.

@Minh:Actually, they claim to have done research, and have given reasons. Doesn't mean there's any real productivity gain, kinda like the folks claiming losses due to the color change. The reality is probably that if there is any difference (positive or negative) it's not enough to waste time with.

"I don't like it" is a valid opinion, but to argue about it is pointless and frankly stupid. To beat the topic into the ground the way we have goes beyond pointless. You know, there's people he really like the changes. Are their opinions less important than yours?

If someone simply said "I don't like it" I wouldn't be responding. But the anger, venom, etc. in a few hundred threads is unproductive, stupid, pointless, tedious, boring, etc.

Do you honestly think Microsoft would have revisited the whole menu case issue with VS had it not been for all of the threads and all of the responses that were given on the subject? Sometimes just saying "I don't like this" isn't enough to be heard above all of the "you just don't like change" noise.

@wkempf, both sides can make claims either way, but we're really talking about a color value or casing of some text... ie, stuff that's REALLY easy to change. We're talking about the UI of Visual Studio, not a button on the iPad.

The "I don't like it" is a perfectly good argument because the UI is so subjective. I'm not saying people wouldn't get used to it. Maybe some never will. And MS has relented. But you can't say "I don't like it" is not valid on something so subjective AND easy to fix

    A valid argument for what?

    "Red stinks."

"No it doesn't. I love red."

"Your an idiot. Red is horrible."

I think you're missing my point. Don't like it, fine. Tell Microsoft you'd prefer something else. I suppose. It doesn't hurt and it may well get Microsoft to make things configurable, as it did in this case. Nerd rage, demand someone be fired, start multiple threads, continue to complain and start new threads after Microsoft tells you it's configurable... well, that's not really fine anymore.

I use it every day to sync fine quality music and podcastery to my phone, so no; Zune app is not dead.
