Office for iPhone

Big YEAH! for Microsoft on this. Sure it's limited to just the phone but it's free and a big step forward for Microsoft in trying to move Office forward without diminishing the need for W8 tablets. Let's hope they release the Android version soon. (Though with the current relationship between Microsoft and Google I doubt we'll see this any time soon.)

IMO the goal should be to keep people buying Office and keep them in the Microsoft ecosystem. They just need to adopt the BYOD concept and let Windows devices sink or swim on their own.

@DCMonkey: Damn. I must of drunk the kool-aid after all. Even so it's still nice to see that they're toying with the idea of freeing Office from its Windows prison.

Also the Office app is missing a lot of functionality that's present in iWork for iOS, it feels very half-baked.

@PopeDai: I wonder how it compares to Office Mobile on WP?

I feel like iWork is a bit of a loss leader for Apple to make their iProducts enterprise friendly.

I feel like this thing is just to sweeten the deal for Office 365 subscribers who probably have Windows PCs with the full Office suite at work.

I think Microsoft would have liked to have had more time for their Windows8 mobile platform to gain more traction, but Apple forced their hand.

Come Autumn (delays notwithstanding), iWorks will be available, via the web, on any platform and will also be able to suck Office documents into the Apple ecosystem. Around that time, I reckon Microsoft will release Office for the iPad.

FYI, it's been 10+ years since Office division offer MS Office for Mac.

And I doubt they'll offer Office for Android because there aren't any "MS Office for Linux" yet.

The Linux desktop market and Android market (as well as app development) are two totally different beasts. Look at the market share between the two. How many Linux desktops in use vs Android devices?

IMO, Microsoft would be foolish to exclude Android from Office. If they can't get people to migrate to their devices at least get them to migrate to their software and ecosystem.

Nop. I just want to point out there's team making Office software targeting Mac environment already.

If they want to make Office for Andriod, they'd have to hire another team of people. (I know there's already lots of Linux people working in Microsoft already, but they're in Windows division. And people in Windows division don't transfer to Office divison) By the time you hear they hiring such people, I think you'll have to wait 1 or 2 years before the MS Office for Andriod come out.

I wonder who wrote the Microsoft branded OneNote app I'm using on my Android? Must have been the Windows division because we all know Linux development = Android development. You might as well say that Web development = WinRT development (you know HTML5/JS clients).

I do think you're right about waiting 1 to 2 years but its more because of the fabulous relationship Google and Microsoft have these days and not because Microsoft lacks the expertise in building Android apps themselves or outsourcing them.

@DeathByVisualStudio: I don't know OneNote for Andriod exist already. Lumia 920 is the only smartphone I ever have by the way.
