Office on the iPad; OH YEAH!

    Now here's the smartest move Microsoft has made in a long time. When W8/WP8 gets no traction in stopping the bleed from PCs to iOS and Android devices at least they'll still own the office productivity market. Let's hope an Android version is right around the corner. (Edit: I guess not: "Additionally, it was revealed that an Android version of the platform was not being developed at this time." -- awww, that sucks but I guess it makes sense since Android tablets haven't taken off yet.) Overall, nice work Office team.

    As an added benefit this puts some heat on the Windows team to have to stand on their own two [left] feet instead of relying on the Windows/Office lock-in to sell Windows for them.

    Smart Office

    This is a joke, right?  Is it April 1 already?

    Seriously, are you really going to type a 10 page document in Word on an iPad with its 10 inch screen and virtual keyboard?  I don't think so.

    @Heywood_J: You aren't going to write long documents on an iPad, but the ability to view and make small last-minute edits to Office documents or run Powerpoint presentations are perfectly viable use cases.

    @Heywood_J:

    You can get docking stations for iPad with real keyboard. Probably something you'd want to invest if you actually want to type 10 page documents in the iPad. Although some people touch-type on the touchscreen hilariously fast (I'm not one of them).

    Many people already do. They use a keyboard dock.

    I think this new mindset of MS putting their software on other platforms than Windows is a great move. It gets their products in the hands of people who would normally ignore them and use something else. Maybe if the experience is good, they'll think twice when going out to buy the iPad 3 and get a Windows 8 tablet instead.

    I use Word on my //Build W8 tablet all of the time when docked with a Bluetooth keyboard (and sometimes even without a dedicated keyboard -- Mouse without Borders to truly awesome.)

    I can't speak for the iPad's keyboard but you are correct that the W8 virtual keyboard is horrible. No <TAB> key makes entering text in web forms a PITA. Looks like white space is more important than functionality for Microsoft.

    I hope they will get enough feedback in time and make Metro version way way way better.

    Leaving WM on 5/2018 if no apps, no dedicated billboards where I drive, no Store name.

    So MS can write a version of Office for iOS but can't seem to pull off the same feat for WinRT?

    That said, I look forward to it.

    Unfortunately there appears to be some question as to whether this is a real product, a fake, or a misrepresentation of MSOWOA.
