WP 7.8 - It's here and how to get it

    Public Service Announcement:

Windows Phone 7.8 is now available via Zune. If it's not showing there's an apparently risk free technique to force it onto the phone (I've just done the first update via this method, no problemo, and the second one is in process now - I'll let you guys know how it goes).

Success - one phone with a shiny refreshed OS sat on my desk Smiley

It feels like there are notable performance improvements, although I have only used it for about 30 seconds.

(The actual 7.8 update seemed to be a lot quicker than the preparatory update... Perplexed)

Yep, got it.  So nice to be able to reduce pinned apps that never use their tiles effectively, same info as before but just less scrolling, really makes a difference.

I had to use the "trick", and its updating now, though still in the "creating a backup" stage.

Spent a couple hours adjusting my tiles. I have a lot of Web pages pinned and I just counted a total of 199 tiles, and I didn't even add any new ones. (though I had to refresh a couple of dozen Web pages to get small images to show).

Another method which I had more luck with:

(Note that this method is more risky than the one above)

To do the disconnect trick, I simply used control panel | network device and disabled / enabled using the mouse. Would have been rather hard to get to the back of my computer and unplug in a timely manner.

MS is handling this very poorly. I still am not able to find a news annoucment from MS that is being pushed out nor can I find a list of phones. They need to go back to having the grid announcing what carriers are pushing out updates.

It was announced by Nokia on their blog yesterday:

Starting today, and rolling out over the coming weeks, a message will appear on the phone encouraging users to get the update. Simply connect your phone to your computer via Zune for PC, or the Windows Phone app for Mac - and follow the onscreen instructions.

I'm not sure what you expect them to differently/better. That seems like a pretty streamlined distribution right there.

I have read that T-Mobile USA will not let the 7.8 update on the Nokia Lumia 710 mobile phones. If this is the case I guess other T-Mobile stores all over the world will also prohibit the update. Since I am developing an VoIP app (like this one: http://www.voip-sip-sdk.com/p_511-windows-phone-platform-voip.html) it would be great to have it on the 7.8 update but unfortunately I am at T-Mobile. I do not want to change my Lumia 710 for another WP7 OS mobile because my next phone will be a WP8 OS based one but still have 6 months from my 2 year contract.

@Ian2: I used the tool Ian linked to to update my Samsung Onmia 7 with no issues (at least none so far).

Going to take a while to get used to the larger tiles -- looks 'fat' compared to the previous slim version.  Perplexed

@leoncr82:My wife is with T-Mobile (albeit in the UK)  and I used the tool above to update her 710 without any issues so far.

Updated the day it was released (3 Mobile) Samsung Omnia (UK). Kind of underwhelmed. Just makes the home screen it seem busier, meh.

Is anyone else having issues with getting the Bing lock screen wallpapers to automatically update? Mine will only update if I go to settings and switch it from Bing to picture to Bing.

Is it possible to do the update (when the Phone can find it without any hacks) without using Zune?

Bummer that Microsoft still hasn't publically acknowledged the issue with WP7.8 where it enters a state where it refuses to updating external live tile images. App developers are currently taking the heat over it, getting 1 star reviews while they cannot do anything else than wait for an indication from Microsoft when the issue will be patched....

This whole 7.8 rollout has been handled poorly. I doubt my device ATT HTC Surround will get the update. Twitter support and phone calls to HTC and ATT have yielded nothing. Microsoft does not do thier update grid anymore nor did they announce what devices are getting the update.

Letting Carriers into the update process screws everything up. Its very dissapointing. I still have not gotten the previous fix dissapering keyboard fix and was hoping to get WP 7.8.
