And, what it means to ''compiling apps in the cloud " ? NGEN ? AOT compiling MSIL ? and optimizing it with AutoV of VC compiler ??
@felix9: I took it as MSIL goes to the marketplace and MS runs ngen. That way the user is getting native code to run.
There are a lot of things in this keynote that I liked, but nothing really revolutionary. I think WP8 devices will fit in nicely with Win8 PCs and tablets, and that MS is really hoping that Android users decide to switch phones during their next upgrade to get the live tiles that they have with Win8.
I wonder why they've never considered vertically oriented long tiles.
I can see that being an option for languages with vertically oriented text. It just doesn't seem like it would make good use of the real-estate for RTL and LTR languages.
I don't know about WP but I think it would work on W8 with some apps. Extra-large tiles would also work on W8 for some apps I think.
Are there going to other big announcements in the near future? TechEd maybe?
What is annoying on the W8 start screen is that things always arrange themselves horizontally, so if you have only two more tiles than full column they're sticking out of the side, and you can't place one right underneath the other.
@Ian2: Exactly how many identical pictures does somebody need?
The c9 video for this event doesn't have it in mp4 format? Safari is complaining sl is notinstalled
Awesome summit. I take back the comment on pushing more features over kernel changes, because there are so many good features automatically included by switching the kernel.
And yesss.... more customizable screen. I finally can reduce the lengthy screen to a more compact organization. Hope I can group apps in app hub, should be supported, a lot of request for that.
And DX11 games? I wonder if that is even possible. It only says D3D, but, could it be DX11, like GPGPU and etc?
@Minh: We don't have an actual C9-style video yet, we just have the live stream sitting up online that people can play. It is actually fairly low bitrate (the on-demand version), around 750kbps so we are waiting for the high res copy arriving tomorrow morning to upload it as a full on Channel 9 video, completely with downloads, Silverlight and HTML 5 playback, etc...
What about WinRT? Can C++/.Net use it? What is XAML in WP8? Silverlight or WinRT based? What about html metro apps? I thought this was the main benefit of a common kernel, write once, run anywhere, not 'just a few tweaks' and two builds of your app.
