What makes a great game?

Well, every really great game allows you to go beyond what the developers intended, but not in a way that would be "nerfed" or removed in an update (ie. not a cheat but only a hilarious advantage that comes with play experience):

    That deserves a cheevo Smiley

That's hilarious and awesome. How did he get the plane to loop like that without control?

Wait, are we being asked our opinion on what makes a game great, or is it about bugs and glitches within games?

By flying it straight up before ejecting. He discusses it in the YouTube comments for the video.

I see this as an opportunity to both discuss what makes games great and share awesome unintended ways of play.

@Bas: The flight model of this mod is tweaked toward "fun" vs "realistic". Like the helicopters that am told resemble flying RC's, it's possible these jets model has taken ideas from very light planes. I recall as a kid doing paper planes from A4 sheets and I saw similar phenomenom - if the paper plane drops at low speed and gains speed while dropping, the increase in air flow under the paper wings can cause enough lift to make it go up just before hitting ground. This tweaked model is only active when no one is piloting the plane or when it's destroyed mid-air. (It tends to fly more straight when you are piloting even if you don't have any throttle as far as I recall)

From recent experience?  Any game with 'Lego' in the title that's based on a film ...

    Lego LOTR FTW!

lol, so the elder scrolls basicly :3, i sort of agree. for me a must have is an open world, free play, for instance gta, fallout, the elder scrolls. but that means nothing if it has a crap story, i also like the story to take longer than three or so hours to complete. that sucks. graphics arent a must, but i will enjoy it if its nice to look at. and fps isnt a must, but is prefered. i think anyway.....and as for mods i only really mod rts games on pc, iam thinking of learning to mod my xbox though.

@androidi: That's a purely subjective question. What makes a great wine? A great car? A great tree?

To know what I consider makes a great game, you only need to look here. Big Smile

It's a great tree if it is immutable Smiley

You can take a bad game and make it better with commentary.

Or you can improve it with math a physics. Take for example, QWOP.

Battlefield Stuntacular (BF 1942 video) (skip to 0:50)

    I enjoyed the tricks & loops at 5:40 - 6:40 the most.

After extended consideration, I believe what really increases the probabilities of a game being remembered a great game is the combined ability of being multiplayer and offering enough moddability, such that if the game was good enough to have a large enough community, there would be enough modders that there would eventually be a great mod for it.

So technically that doesn't make it a great game but my "most played games of all time" list is almost exclusively such games.
