Win10: Bewilderment.... Not loading it...

on my main machine...and coming from me - who loads everything - should you be worried? Am i wrong?

Let's look at a couple of things

    Generic Forum Image

    UX - UI - ICONS

    - please tell me these are not the finished icons / UX.  It is - again - a mishmash of old and new.

You cant have it both ways.  On the taskbar the first few icons are tablet like - line drawings - ripped off from iOS.  Then next to them is a blue edge logo.  You cant DO that. You cannot have a solid - next to outlines - and colors next to white

perhaps you think this differentiates OS icons - from APP icons - then you need to add a thin line line AFTER the outline white icons.  As if to say - these end here - now here comes your dogs breakfast of old and new and flat and 3d and coloured and non-colored icons

    - on my computer (the one you gave me ive been using as a test ) all the above outline white icons look bitty.  Like 8 bit.

    - text in old apps - like in Spybot - looks blurry

    - All the new windows 10 icons.

Im sure you have heard this before - in many posts and forums - they are ugly.  They try to look like the past - and sort of be flat - but they are not flat. Most importantly - almost everyone of them - the perspective looks totally wrong.  Lets look at what i see (above) when i open ... um... Explorer?

the first 6 icons look like bad win95 / win3/1 icons.  They should all be traffic signs flat - outlines.  OR STOP USING THEM.  Just dont use both.

also the first 3 are - sort of flat - and the next 3 are - sort of - 3d

    The colours are horrendous

Open settings icon - blue square with gear.... delete - remove huh?

    Then there is spacing

The new min / max/ close - i see they are wider apart to accommodate fingers - but they are too thin to share that wide width - it looks wrong.  Go half the distance on these... or make them bolder

Recycle bin - half 3d half flat half out of perspective top to bottom - YEESH

the area under the main explorer icons - the fonts mess with the above fonts - even tho they are light grey

The start menu.  i will take the time to customize this and let you no later - but first thoughts are - half flat half 3d - no real "all programs" that goes to real folders with properties - not invisible metro style "crAPPS"  with no properties.

I turned off all the MS new photos etc options screen - you havent earned trust yet - i want photo viewer (for now) prove newer is bet...FASTER

top right time date - looks too big for area around it

in general what ever the font is - looks bigger and more retarded than before - sort of too narrow and skinny to pull itself off

    RIGHT MOUSE

these menus seem to change and look different - depending where you are

for example - in edge all of wordpresses custom stuff no longer works - actually most all of wordpress doesnt work well in edge - it is either sluggish and buggy or just sort of draws weird

Over all - on the first touch screen HP all in one - that was 3000 dollars - 7 years ago - that you gave me - every version of windows has made it faster and better - BUT win 10 (tech preview)

i loaded the final release candidate (or what they say is) today - and had no speed improvements - and if any thing the network / internet speed has dropped lower than before -

everything is herky jerky and dragging windows around is sluggish

i ran hijack / spybot / adaware / etc just to make sure it wasnt me

THEN i wiped half the hard drive of photos, videos, etc to see if "more room" might help it go faster

So ya - i know this is an old machine - but it is a GREAT old machine - that win10 has brought to its knees

    so...

do i load win10 on my main machine next 2 weeks?  Win8.1 is rocking on my current machine.  Im fine with the half flat / half 3d - as we all no by now it was a mistake

what im not fine with - is re-loading my machine to a new version that DOESNT FIX THIS, seems slower, more buggy, and doesnt let me control when updates can be loaded

i think im staying with win8.1

That wouldn't be too worrisome - if it wasnt coming from one of your biggest fans

I predict a HUGE HUGE backlash if you auto update every one for free with this thing

    * ...if you thought a free U2 album was a backlash.. just WAIT

    * if you say:  it is not possible to control the look of all icons in other apps

id say - you bought every periferal when win95 came out and XP

this is the same thing - but its not hardware..

you litterally have to - go to BEST BUY ICON STORE - and look up every apps icons - if it is 3d - you need to make your OWN version of it that is flat - and replace the default icons after that app is installed

To regain control over their icons - companies would have to submit an approved FLAT icon

3 hours - an honest post - no way to tell views

no wonder this site is a relic - and treated as one

(i wouldnt treat it like that - and i would show who views what - the most important thing that was removed.  yet i still come here to say - ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THIS????

    that's a fan

Jamie: graphics stuff, you are right they seem to have no interest in really fixing the icons and crazy use of colors and lack of ways for the user to take control.  speed , I have not seen an issue in that area.

What build are you running ? Is it TH1 ? If it is that is an rc build.

To be honest the whole icon soup makes me cringe also but I have come to accept that Microsoft has given up on fixing it.

Jamie, it's Saturday evening when you posted here in Redmond time zone.

If you don't upgrade, you won't be able to install any apps that I am developing because I have decided to only support Win 10.

I'll have a post up soon about my sudden switch from developing a Windows Phone 7.8 to Win10 that I will be titling 'Mango Blues'.

by the way, ok the UI stuff on icons and some other things is sad but in other important areas they have the right idea and have solutions for several long standing windows issues.

like application uninstall / the registry cleanup mess and the app store for windows and xbox.

so they have made important progress.

also for multiple monitors you can now have different display scaling for different monitors.

so there is a lot of good stuff in Windows 10 that needs to be given credit.

    1. The icons aren't perfect, no.  But they are MUCH better than they were in early previews.  Geez... those were awful.
    2. Part of the reason right-click might look different in some cases is because of Continuum.  For example, if you right click (mouse or stylus) the desktop or taskbar the menus look fairly "normal".  But if you right-tap using your finger on a touch screen, the spacing is larger.  (But this isn't the case everywhere.)
    3. Keep putting this kind of stuff into feedback.  Windows 10 will never be finished, they seem to want to constantly improve.  (I'm sure it would be most helpful if it were one feedback per item instead of a 3-hour post like this.)

Auto-Update? I think that people still have to CHOOSE to update, don't they?

As for the icons etc... I believe that the majority of Windows users care more about functionality, usability, reliability and performance - UI details such as icons... not so much... and those are details MS can work on as they go forward.

Icons need work, and design all over the OS not consistent....agreed.

Those aren't showstoppers for me at all.

Yeah it's not the end of the world but it is sad that with each new version of windows the overall UI gets more and more fragmented into chunks that each have a dated look from that era of the OS, the xp looking parts the vista stuff the seven stuff the eight stuff and now the ten bits.

they really should focus on the UI for a while and get more of it cleaned up, and do something to make it possible to re-do the system look w/o having to spend months tacking down where all the bits are hidden for that.

You are way too late to register these criticisms and you're doing it in the wrong place. You should have said all this months ago in the Windows Feedback application. (And lots of people did, hence the icons have been improved immensely since the early builds.) You're right that they are still a big mishmash of different styles but it is now far too late to do anything about them.

@SimonJ: It's not too late. We know that there will be regular updates, so hopefully as they work through the list of stuff, cleaning up icons might end up being a priority. People just need to make sure that the feedback keeps happening.

I read (in the OP) the context as everyone being forced to upgrade to Win10 - which I believe is different to your comment.

Personally speaking, I think that there are bits of Windows that people just do not touch, under any circumstances whatsoever, because the code is too complex, and the risk to backwards compatibility and the test matrix required means that it would cost astronomical amounts  of money for what some may see as a poor ROI. Microsoft have hired some of the best designers in the world, if they cannot persuade Microsoft, no-one can.

The user interface shouldn't be something people have to complain about. Against all better judgement, I got a MacBook  recently(after swearing to never buy another Apple product), because all the other computers from HP, Acer and even Lenovo looked clunky and ugly, and the specs were clearly about profit, mismatched RAM and hybrid SSD's (I did not have time to order one over the internet). The machine has a reasonably sized SSD and 16 gig RAM and looks amazing, and to be honest runs Windows perfectly with parallels, it is my main development machine for work.

Onto the user interface, in iOS, everything is consistent visually, especially the icons, so the design will always appeal to the masses. There are too many people with too much influence in Microsoft that kill off any suggestion that Visual Studio or Windows have a complete redesign, Apple would never allow this so their products appeal to more people for simple reasons not complicated ones.

For all the shouting the Visual Studio team can shout about it being the one tool you can use for any device, and Windows everywhere, the inability to afford sufficient attention to a consistent design is why designers, hipsters and those who drink the kool-aid will never be seen dead with a Windows machine.

Buy a brand new Audi or BMW and you will find most models have the same engine from 6 years ago or even longer, but they improve everything that is visual, the interior, the aerodynamics and bodywork, even the grille. This tends to be how Apple work, if Windows was a car your would have backseats from the seventies, with the latest recaro seats at the front. You would have formula 1 gear shifters, but the actual knob on the gear shift would be from the eighties, people should not have to state the obvious, but if I am honest, I know just how complex the system is, I have not mentioned anything till now because I wouldn't want to be tasked with updating the parts of Windows people complain about, because it is not at all easy.
