Win8 Media Center Update Failed, then fixed.

    Just noting this down here for reference in case anyone else has a similar problem ...

    I used 'Add Feature' to install Media Center in Win8, but during the restart I got the message that the update had failed.

    I tried a second time and it was the same.

    I searched about a bit and eventually found a reference to the log file: %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Anytime Upgrade\Upgrade.log

    Checking this it turns out that before adding a feature, Win8 will install any outstanding updates; if one of these updates fails to install, then whole deal is rolled back.

    Using Control Panel, I access the 'Classic' windows update screen (search Control Panel for 'Update') and performed the update manually.  The 'EU Browser choice' update was failing, so I right-clicked and set a hidden (not an update I really need anyway).

    After this, Adding the Media Center feature worked.

    So, is this just the EU screwing with MS again ?

  • Dr Herbie

    @elmer:Well it's kind of Windows Update screwing with everyone again; in my case it happened to be the EU Browser Choice, but it could be any other one.

    I'm still waiting for WMC key. It's been over 24 hours now. Sad

  • Dr Herbie

    @spivonious: I think mine took about 48 hours -- don't know if this is due to a backlog, or just not being treated as a priority.

    @spivonious: just a little over 24 hours for me.

    We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.

    How do you get the Media Center key? That's the only thing holding me back from switching to W8 permanently

  • Dr Herbie

    @Minh: You enter your Win8 product key here and they will (eventually) email you a free feature key for Media Center (until Jan 31st, after which it's still pretty cheap).

     EDIT: Actually, you don't even need the product key, you just need to enter your email address -- I wonder if this still works if you haven't yet installed Win8 ?

    After January it costs $9.99 in the "Add Windows Features" dialog box. Why they didn't just make it free in there instead of forcing us to search around for a key is beyond me.

    @Dr Herbie: Just got the key.

    I noticed in the fine print, "Offer valid from October 26, 2012, until January 31, 2013, and is limited to one product key per email address. In addition, each product key can only be used with one computer."

    This is mainly for me to test out PowerDVD 11 to see if it works with Windows 8. The Metro Netflix app is so much better than the WMC Netflix plugin that I'm really hoping to upgrade my HTPC to Windows 8.

    Thanks Dr. Herbie. One other app that's not working for me in W8 is VLC. I wonder if anyone here knows of a work-around... besides using Media Player... I like VLC ability to play FLV

    @Minh:VLC works fine for me. Version 2.0.2. (now upgraded to 2.0.4)

  • CaRDiaK

    No problems for me at all with my upgrade including WMC Smiley

    Job well done!

    Media Center shows - there will not be enough room to record - in my schedule list even when there is enough room, and the shows do get recorded. I don't know if it is a bug or not. I didn't have this "problem" in windows 7.

    @Minh: Hey Minh, regarding the XNA Oriented Bounding Boxes Intersection Test you posted on Jan 2007, I have been using it to determine if 2 static 3D objects intersect, it's quite light and useful, but recently a group of test data came, i found the result ran by the program was different with the MATLAB. (e.g : I drew the OBB in MATLAB, they are overlap but the program returned a "false"), not sure if it's an issue here.

    I list one test case below:

    OrientedBoundingBox x1 = new OrientedBoundingBox(new Vector3(-1.996, -1.919, -29), new Vector3(1.996, 1.919, 2));
    OrientedBoundingBox x2 = new OrientedBoundingBox(new Vector3(-14.936, -14.918, -68.498), new Vector3(98.804, 21, 38));

    x1.Transforms = new Matrix(-2.83193445325814E-16, 1.00000000000003, 8.30484626949687E-16, 0,

    3.19189119579733E-16, -1.72619226575269E-15, 1.00000000000004, 0,
    1.00000000000003, -2.32433765116848E-17, 1.38777878078145E-17, 0,
    0.0323250668482836, 0.015000000002937, 0.0549999999999979, 1);

    x2.Transforms = new Matrix(1.00000000000001, 5.963111949E-19, 3.309216756803E-16, 0,
    -1.219727444E-18, 1, -9.96984249E-20, 0,
    -6.617970060852E-16, 1.897353802E-19, 1.00000000000001, 0,
    0.009000000000000011, -0.005999999999999991, 0.02, 1);

    bool b = x1.Intersects(x2);    // in MATLAB these 2 OBB are overlap but here returns a FALSE

    For accuracy requirements I changed the related float to double,  That would be highly appreciate if you and me could have a discussion about it, thanks a lot.

    So I got around to testing this out. PowerDVD11 installs and runs fine on its own, but the link from within WMC just hangs at a blue screen. Not too bad, since I can launch PDVD from the Start Screen and have it start in Cinema Mode.
