You will be able to use Up Button in the newly improved Win8 Windows Explore. This new feature will be the testament of how Windows will continue to evolve and bring newer better experience to Windows users.
Try it out in Win8 CP.
I never missed the button and don't see any need for it.
Hang on, are we criticising Microsoft for putting features back into Windows after a bunch of people whined endlessly about them? Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I'm happy for Jamie that they put it back. I don't think the rest of the world really cares that much.
@Sven Groot: Where is Jamie anyway? He's been awful quiet of late. As has W3bbo for that matter. Bring back old niners I say.
best would be giving the users a choice in the Explorer options whether they want to see the up-button or not. This would make all users happy.
no! forcing the users to like something what a small team at MSFT thinks is the best is the WORST solution. Choice is always the best!!!!!!!!!!
Users don't always know what they want and don't know what's possible (technically), and will most likely commit to a short term situation that might not scale well to those scenarios that they haven't yet thought of but will most likely come up later. Users do, however, know the tasks they perform and the goals they need to meet, and thus, have the ability to assess whether something helps or hinders those tasks. This thread is an example of users measuring their (in)ability to perform certain tasks. What's left is for MS to take this feedback and iterate (if they don't already have something in the works).
Of course not bashing the new improvement. It wouldn't be called improvement right? It wouldn't be added if it is useless by MS analysis. I wouldn't know it is godd or bad. It is a new feature, and I will try it later.
Breadcrumbs pretty much replaced the "up" button for me. They're much more powerful and give you multiple levels of "up" depending on what you need. Add to that the fact that the breadcrumbs let you move sideways in the parent just as easy.
I agree, but, it is supposed to be an improvement right? New feature = YaY.
Don't like the UP button. Seems like a pointless waste of pixels, breadcrumbs do the same thing and more.
I didn't need the up button and prefer using breadcrumbs, otoh people kept complaining through two releases, so guess the Windows team thought "whatever, it's just a button, if for whatever reason people still want it let's just stick it on"
Microsoft's whole attitude towards the Desktop in W8 seems to be: what the heck, we can add as much geeky stuff to Desktop apps as possible, because the Metro UI will be for regular consumers. The Desktop will be our "expert" interface. Which is why you have admin tools on the right click menu where the Start button used to be.
@brian.shapiro: There is a setting in the Metro start screen that will display all the admin tools. By default they are set to not be displayed.
