Windows 10, first thoughts.

So what do Niners think of the Windows 10 Tech Preview then? (I asumming most of us have installed it!)

Having picked up a cheap Lenovo this afternoon and given it a bit of a spin, here are my initial thoughts:

Cut + Paste in the command line - Nice, but I'd hoped for something a bit more Mouse friendly, as it seems to insist on you selecting text with the keyboard (unless you Mark old style). It's also a bit quirky in places, e.g. doing a CTRL-X does a Copy, rather than a Cut, which isn't really what I'd expect.

Lack of window borders - Bit Mac-ified, the shadowing effect somewhat helps but I still think it makes it unnecessarily hard to see the edges of applications, I think I preferred solid borders.

The Start Menu. Well, what's to say. As someone who uses lots of Modern apps, naturally it started off polluted with a huge list of "Install" options for every app I use or have just tried once, so required a lot of cleanup work first before it's even vaguely usable as a menu. In all likelihood I'll never do any more than search with it (as with Vista/7) so in that regards it's at least a big improvement over those by not constraining the end results as much and by integrating web search too.

The lack of an easy "Fetch all my Modern apps" option was a pain in the butt too, since it basically meant going through the Start Menu clicking every entry just to kick off downloading of apps. Surely there has to be a better way than that?

By far the most broken feature is the Virtual Desktop stuff though, it's got all sorts of quirky behaviour because (I suspect) it seems to be trying to maintain a single Taskbar across them all. This has the exciting side-effect that occasionally launching an app like Notepad can suddenly reconfigure your entire display, because you had Notepad open on another desktop and Windows takes that to mean you want to switch to it. Terrible, terrible UI. Let's hope that gets a major overhaul soon, although judging by the Continuum stuff, I think the Taskbar is in desperate need of a complete re-think anyway, so maybe that's already on the cards.

Will be interested to see how things change as Continuum and other features arrive, but right now it feels much more of a step back than one forward.

    1) Finally Window Mode on Metro Apps. Finally. This is the biggest feature I was asking for. This is a must to finally allow business to transition to metro apps.

    2) I wish they still keep the swipe down gesture. I remember I can drag the title down to close the app with my mouse in Win8.1, I want to keep using that.

    3) I can't snap the full screen apps. I think the full screen apps should act like this: a window mode that only supports (maximize and snaps) and plus the auto hide title bar. Disappointed that it couldn't implement such behavior yet. And I should be able to move the full screen app from one monitor to another. And full screen app should have much higher performance (aka video games).

    4) I can't really make app group in Start Menu. :(

    5) The Start Screen isn't like the screenshot in another thread. :(

    6) Honestly I want to use Start Screen, except it should still display the taskbar. And it should have some spaces for me to left mouse click to the leave the Start Screen (like the start screen takes 95% of the screen instead of 100%, Configurable of course). And make it more like the screenshot in another thread (has list of things like Control Panels on the left). Why couldn't they just do this. :(

    7) A lot of App failed to reinstall when I install preview ( not a big deal, but, annoying). Also very long black screen when I install with my SSD.

    8) The unsnap is a fail. In Win7, when you snap a window to the right screen. And then, unsnap back, it will go back to the size before the snap. Now, it just retain that 50% screen size, which is annoying, I have to resize it again. This is definitely a big fail as the snap behavior is well designed since Win7. Totally unacceptable for failing this.

    9) We need folders for metro apps in Start. Copy WinPh please.

    10) My PC icon is fugly. Truly Fugly. And the Window Explore icon, any 2 years old can do it. I know it is preview, but, bluhaaaa. Seriously, people in this gen is truly weird.

So, far, I am not terribly satisfied, but, the Windowed Mode and Start Menu are the biggest two factors for business. And I am very pleased to see those two being offered. There are a lot of things they need to work on, especially they should retain many of gestures from Win8.

Leaving WM on 5/2018 if no apps, no dedicated billboards where I drive, no Store name.

@magicalclick: This is good fodder for the feedback app. I've been burning it up with various little things.

My main issue has been with ie11 which is constantly crashing.  Anyone else having similar issues?

I'm really missing Metro I.E. I haven't had any problems with ie 11. (and yes I know there is a script you can run to get Metro I.E., I'll use my still windows 8 surface pro for the Metro ie)

@Ian2: Yeah, I've noticed some occasional odd crashes so something isn't quite right there.

@Proton2: Me too, the desktop IE is a lot more clunky and I've gotten used to the nice surfing experience on my Surface 2. I'm trying to give them a pass on the tablet side of things until that gets put in though (trying to use it as-is on a tablet would certainly be horrible)

You can still user F11 key aka full screen mode. I know it is not exactly the same, but it is a close one.

I got my first blue screen for a long time. This was when I was switching out of a game on one of my desktops to another one of my 5 desktops.

Things feel slightly speedy in some areas. I wonder if it's a perception thing due to windowed mode but metro apps seem to just load faster.

I do enjoy the borderless windows.

The search feature in the taskbar is sort of crappy - in its current state, I'll never use it.

I'm really just hoping for more polish. Things look "neat" but not super. I think the new icons will help. More animations (envious of the transitions between desktops on OS X) and better use of color would be nice.

    @Proton2:

    @Niner502267:

Speaking of full screen, I expect that to be the default mode for metro apps on tablets at some later update for W10.

Unfortunately for now, even when metro apps are full screen, you can't swipe the screen edges for pulling up the app bar, or for closing the app.

Ok only asking here because the other thread is closed and I think I deserve an answer. What in the ever living frack is a "Moto" ?

It's not the fullness of the screen, it's more the UI that I got used to. My Win10 machine has no touch screen and had 4 monitors. Its a HP laptop, using USB 3 workstation thingy . I discovered you can bring up the charms with the track pad (swipe in from right).

I understand you. I must confess that somehow miss full screen mode present in Windows 8. I also hoped that MS would add a full screen mode for "desktop" application, something similar to what already exists in Office, where Word, Excel, ... can be opened in a sort of full screen mode. Full screen mode make sense for certain applications / scenarios.

Logitech software allowed me to quickly swipe / switch between apps and use other special functions in Win 8.x, but it is broken in Win 10. Hopefully new realeases of Logitech software will support Task view and/or other functions in the future.

@Niner502267: One big theme for 10 seems to be the convergence of form factors. What remains to be seen is how that will affect the development model. Hopefully they will allow desktop apps more access to WinRT. Best case is that the distinction between Modern apps and desktop apps goes away, and Continuum is a concept that applies to more than just Windows itself.

Users are a diverse and strange lot... see this article on Thurrott's site.

    http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/here-are-top-user-requests-windows-10

#2 is "add animation when opening start menu"
#6 is "make a beautiful boot screen"

    Seriously...  WTF?

I was wondering the same thing.  "Motorola" is all I got, but it didn't make sense in context, so I dunno.

It is loto, it is noto. It is Motto. It is Motto. It is Kotto.

Basically it is a new direction on "user feedback". If you have a better term for it, yeah, that's the correct term to use.
