What doesn't work on your machine?

    @PaoloM:

Works on my machine. Yesterday I did about an hour of intensive copy/paste back and forth between the reader app, and desktop IE using a combination of keyboard and mouse methods. No problems whatsoever.

I tried to copy e.g. an Link from Chrome App to the Folder on the Desktop. This doesn't work for me. I think this is a problem between Apps and Desktop Applications in general. The same problem occurs if I choose the Mouse to Drag the Link on my Desktop. This doesn't work too if I starting Google Chrome as App instead of Application on the Desktop I cannot move to the Desktop anymore This happens with other Applications too.

I think this is a very important issue to interchange between Apps and Desktop Application.

On my new ASUS ultrabook with Win8 preinstalled CTRL X cuts the selected text. But often not always leaves an 'x' behind. I thought it was me accidentally typing 'x' twice. It is not.

Second problem. After that often the selected text is not actually cut (or copied) captured. The previous clipboard selection gets pasted (instead of the current one) when pressing CTRL V. It happens often. Not always easy to replicate though.

Do you have the same issue?

@SueSticazsky: I have a new Levovo i7 laptop and the trackpad just plain does not work. There is so much latency, you swipe/gesture and it is a few seconds before the system responds. I am beginning to think I am jinxed

I installed W8 Pro a couple of days ago and today tried OneNote.  I wanted to copy the 'free' Windows Media Center key email from the Metro Windows 8 Mail app.  Initially I couldn't get any Copy selection at all.  Then I discovered if I selected a text area I could copy if I pressed my mouse left key for a number of seconds before moving it.  However it still only copied as far as the first graphic in the email.  I could restart the copy after the graphic.  After that I just pasted into OneNote without a problem.  So I guess I have half a bug!

    I'm using a laptop (i3 2.5GHz with 8GB memory).

Just out of interest - is this always copying from a Metro app to somewhere else (i.e. doesn't affect Desktop?)

I'm wondering whether this might be related to the auto-hibernation of background Metro apps - lots of clipboard actions are managed by COM and Windows messages under the hood, so if you copy something onto the clipboard which actually sets the OleClipboard to an IStream, you might find that you're unable to get the data out at the other side if the program has suspended.

Sounds like an avenue for investigation at least... :/

Here's a concrete example.  On my new hp with Windows 8,  I was in IE reading a magazine article from an online source and needed to copy the URL and paste it into a discussion group on my college website.  It will not paste into the blog for the discussion.  I've been doing the class from another computer running XP but purchased a new one running Windows 8.  Had to go back to the old computer and it worked just fine.

IE was an app for the magazine article and college website  was open on a google app.  Are you saying that if I go to the desktop, both should work and I can copy and paste?  Will try...brb.

I have also had an issue with Copy/Paste reliability in Windows 8. The symptom was that unless you did a Copy operation in one window and directly topped the destination window where you performed the Paste, the Paste Operation would behave as if the Clipboard was empty. Once in a while, I believe it pasted a NUL. For instance, while using Outlook, have a new e-mail open; open IE, highlight and copy the address URL; top Outlook-InBox(main window); top the new e-mail window; paste will fail. Repeat the same, except top the new e-mail window directly and paste would work.

The problem was not Windows 8, but the "Send to Bluetooth" COM Add-in on my system that apparently shimmed itself into the Clipboard system. Disabling C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Bluetooth\btmoffice.dll in the COM Add-in manager made Copy and Paste robust.

Now if only I could get to "Calculator" quickly from the Desktop....

I wonder if these issues appear only with machines are with upgraded installs of Windows 8.... In my previous experience some weirdness may appear with upgrades (and not with clean installs)... Just wondering...

Upgraded and fresh installs of Windows run exactly the same code under the hood. If there is a problem on one it will affect the other.

I have had a lot of trouble with copy and paste in Windows 8.  Specifically from outlook email properties (when you double click on someone's incoming name to get their email address) into word. But i have had trouble with URL's as well.

@BRehbock: how can i do that?

Yes, same issue here. Win8 on an Asus Zenbook UX31A Touch, purchased with Win8 loaded.

Cut/copy/paste is amazingly frustrating, sometimes it works, most of the time I have to repeat the operation to make it work. Every time I want to throw the machine across the room... between that and the touchpad issues I wish I bought a different machine.

UPDATE: I disabled the send to bluetooth com+ app and cut/copy/paste works reliably now. Thanks for a great tip.

Jeff, I have the same computer and same issues.  Don't know how to disable the "send to bluetooth com+ app" but can probably look that up. If I do that, will I be losing some other functionality I should consider in advance?

This copy/paste issue is a real annoyance!

I also have a problem with cutting and pasting in win8. No matter how I cut or copy I cannot paste. If I right click, use file/cut, use the cut or copy icon or CNTL C. When I go to paste I can't. the paste icon is not highlighted, CNTL V doesn't work or when I right click there is no option to paste.
