Windows 8.1 question...

    I have a question regarding 8.0 owners.

I own a license for Windows 8 Pro System Builder. Install 8, then install 8.1 from the store and we're good while Microsoft let's us receive a free upgrade...

However, this brings to mind a few questions:

    1. Is it possible to perform a bare metal installation of 8.1? If so, will my Windows 8 product key work?
    2. What happens when Microsoft removes the ability to upgrade to 8.1 from the store? If I reformat after the free upgrade window expires, am I back to being a Windows 8 user?

    Thanks!

I'm not aware that the "free upgrade" will be removed - it's more like a service pack.

As far as I know, only TechNet and MSDN subscribers get access to a stand alone ISO. Other consumers are left with the Windows Store "Experience".

This is why I'm questioning that....

If this is true, are Win8 purchasers screwed after two years?

That only means that there will be no further updates to Windows 8. It doesn't mean it will suddenly be impossible to use it. The store (and the update to newer versions) will stay available for much longer than that.

And if all else fails, you can always buy a full retail copy of 8.1 (unlike with Windows 8, those are available now).

Using a win8 key with a win8.1 iso didn't work for me at least, but it seems very unlikely that win8 users will be unable to upgrade to 8.1 at any point in time.. Most likely they will push out 8.1 via windows update at some point in the future and when 8.2 or whatever gets released, we'll most likely be able to go directly from 8.0 to that.

It is true that the upgrade of windows 8 to 8.1 is free but all your application in desktop will gone and need to install again.

    No, they're not.

@seolondon:That would depend upon how you perform the update.  The Store route seems to be 100% conversion.  I.E., things are left in 8.1 with 100% of apps converted.  If you do the "in place upgrade" (not via the store), it seems to uninstall everything.

You are left with a "windows.old" folder holding everything it cannot upgrade.

The only thing I have found that it seems to not like is .NET 1.1 apps.  While this is logical I have some 1.1 apps which cannot be upgraded.  I was able to re-install the 1.1 framework despite the OS and things "work".
