Wow, what's wrong with people?

The news about Sinofsky is pretty big, and I don't know how I feel about Julie Larson-Green taking over, but I do know how I feel about the comments being made.

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57548760-75/meet-julie-larson-green-the-new-head-of-windows/

Read the comments on this site alone. It's pretty much the same everywhere. Nearly half of all comments I've read have been sexist idiocy. "Babe", "hawt", "VPILF" and other such comments have no room anywhere, much less as comments on stories like these.

"Eye candy??? A babe???  Pre-facelift, _maybe_.  Post-op, a huge disaster!  Did you see her pulled up lip???  ***???  She looks like a mangled piece of plastic.  I honestly feel bad, as she's clearly trying to play some feminine beauty card in a highly competitive male-dominated corporate environment.  Sad really that she felt the need to go under the knife."

Really? Who let the Neanderthals in?

Pathetic, but common. One of the reasons I really dislike the software industry.

@Bas: Sexism is common in almost every industry, but I do feel that my generation (I'll be 31 in January) is mostly above sexism and racism and judge the person on his/her actions.

@spivonious: I think there was a lull in sexism during the 1980s and 1990s which meant that those growing up in that time became generally less sexist, but it seems to me that sexism is on the rise again with a new generation.

@Bas: Also a reason I never read comments on news articles.

I mostly have to wonder how can anyone be this sex-starved when you're on the internet? People, you're just one mouse click away from the greatest porn archive in the world. If you need a release this bad, just do it and come back.

It's also pretty funny reading the youtube comments if a slightly (emphasis on slightly) attractive woman is talking about some crap in the vid.. Good God! One would think these guys were raised in a monastery and it's the first time they see a female of the species. Would they get a deadly hormone-overdose as well if they would just turn on TV?

I get it that you never read a book by Marilyn French or Andrea Dworkin...

And you're also perpetuating the prejudice. There's nothing in those comments that would cause anyone to believe that people from the Netherlands are inclined to act that way. Please keep the conversation civil.

And people wonder why there aren't more women in the tech industry?

Not that these posters reflect the tech industry, but it still is a deterrent.  Who (male or female) wants to see that type of talk about somebody who has accomplished landing an important job in a large well known company?

    I hope you're trolling. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neanderthal

My comment had absolutely zero to do with "people from the Netherlands" and does not perpetuate prejudice of any kind.

@wkempf:  "There are two things I hate: intolerance of other cultures, and the Dutch"...

That's because the comments are made by people who make comments on sites. It's a self-selecting set of people who

    a) Have lots of time on their hands but nothing exciting to do with it (i.e. are unimportant)

    b) Think people want to hear what they think (i.e. think they are important).

It's actually a good thing really. It's demonstrating that lots of the people with hateful views have crappy lives where they don't have a job that takes up lots of their time, where they don't have much stuff to do, and they don't have the money to spend the time that they do have doing something exciting; i.e. that people with hateful views have crappy lives.

    It's cosmic justice really.

On the plus side, there's a simple solution to it: Don't read the comments on sites.
