@BitFlipper: I think we're on the cusp of moving away from the "you have to record X shows at once" and, indeed, away from the idea you have to record shows at all. There really isn't any reason that a 'recorded' show can't just be pulled down on demand from some server without the messy business of decoding and saving the stream on-the-fly.

@AndyC: Over the past year, I've been quite happy without having TV service. Various online services have been very satisfactory, and made me realize how frustrating and limiting cable/satellite + DVR can be.

well there is the way that the cable companies and content owners pick and chose what shows to offer on-demand and for how long. as long as they do that then the end user need to be able to record the show so that they can view it when they want and not have it pulled off the cloud by the cable and content folks.

True, as of today. But I suspect you'll see more and more content moving into the realms of on-demand and customers can have the ability to "record" that without having to worry about two or more things possibly overlapping. You can already do this to some extent in the UK with Sky's Anytime+ service. The obvious next step is to simply replace the "record" button in the cable/satelitte box with a background download from the t'interwebs.

I can record two HD ATSC channels at the same time and watch a blu-ray disc with my Celeron E3200 and 2GB of RAM. Recording HDTV does not require many resources at all.

I'd love it if the next Xbox came with a TV tuner built-in. Cablecard would be an extra bonus. But I don't think that will happen. Everyone seems poised to move to IPTV. Comcast has a deal on the Xbox to stream channels. It's much easier to implement IPTV than it is to send out channels to subscribers' homes and support decrypting boxes with slow, confusing menu systems.
