    Behold, the apps of blue!

    New apps [in Windows 8 blue]: There are apparently a few new apps like Alarms, Calculate, Sound Recorder, Files (a basic file manager), and Movie Moments (for trimming the start and endpoints of a video clip).

    AWESOME!

    No matter how much you might want it not to be the case, the apps that ship in-box aren't interesting. Because Blue still ships with the only app that matters, i.e. is this one:

    Yes, I am aware that you can install third party (paid) software on Windows. Thanks.

    Are you claiming that included software doesn't add value? Was the Live Essentials suite pointless?

    Apple ships iMovie and Garageband with every desktop Mac and MacBook, while Microsoft's equivalents on their premier OS are metro SoundRecorder and something called Movie Moments, which apparently gets beaten by the built-in video-edit functions of just about every digital camera.

    Further evidence that Microsoft doesn't care much about anything non-tablet.

    You can also install third party (free) software on Windows.

    And, yes, also you can install first party (free) software on Windows.

    Also, Windows Live Essentials didn't ship with Windows either (and still runs on Windows 8), so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make is.

    I just wish that Windows would install app updates automatically.

    @spivonious: in Blue, yes, Windows Store will have an option for 'installing' app updates automatically.

    namespace WinStore.UI
    {
        [Version(134217728u)]
        public struct Settings
        {
            public bool FilterLanguage;
            public bool FilterAccessibility;
            public bool AutoInstallUpdates;
            public bool AlwaysPromptOnPurchase;
        }
    }

    in Windows 8, it can only 'download' updates.

    namespace WinStore.UI
    {
        [Version(134217728u)]
        public struct Settings
        {
            public bool FilterLanguage;
            public bool FilterAccessibility;
            public bool AutoDownloadUpdates;
            public bool AlwaysPromptOnPurchase;
        }
    }

    @felix9: Finally! That was driving me nuts in W8 and one reason I wasn't paying attention to Windows 8 Store Apps. I'm sure that will tick another adoption box for corporate folks. Thanks for sharing.

    Is there any hint that there will be an SDK update for 8.1?  I'd say WinRT still feels like a V1 framework at times and I'm hoping it gets fleshed out a little more.

    @felix9: cool, that brings it closer to Xbox Infinity functionality.

    Leaving WM on 5/2018 if no apps, no dedicated billboards where I drive, no Store name.

    @Dr Herbie: It'd be strange if there wasn't. In fact, there was all that talk about aligning the WP and WinRT APIs, so maybe they're working on improving the WinRT api?

    @Dr Herbie:

    I've exported a 'diff' between Windows Blue 9385 vs. Windows 8 9200 WinRT APIs http://pastebin.com/nsbz9w6H

    and apparently Justin Angel is writing an article about it too. https://twitter.com/JustinAngel

    I would say it feels more like V0.9. Smiley

    @cbae: typically Microsoft-style 1.0 is just like that, right ? 3.0 could be the real thing.

    I wonder if these apps are even meant to be part of the release, or if they're just demo apps for new platform features, like the Win8 Developer Preview ones (actually a few of those were kinda neat, wish they'd been finished and released.)
