    - is there themes for metro (I call it metro)  like if you work on chrome auto parts all day - and you want a chrome/silver metro - is there one?

    - why all the RGB basic colour palette? is there a - theme - for pastel or muted colors?  B&W
    simple style choices?

    - can I run all of metro in a window - like media centre exactly.  I have used utils that did this - poorly

    - can I have metro on 4 monitors - but my main mon is desktop?

ps - office for metro in 2014 - so adobe and corel close by maybe 2015?

    THE DESKTOP WINS

make metro apps work with mice and monitors (5)  NOW

*stop alienating 15 yr users (that are TRYING to like metro - but there isn't anything FOR it yet

its like you are pushing something that isn't there yet HARD

windows everywhere does not seem to be ready  chill out Wink

ps - if win 8 had have just been a nicer 7 - and all the metro stuff was only on phones and tablets - it would have been sales like now - but you rushed it. you could have got CorelDraw metro and adobe Photoshop metro and OFFICE metro all together and then done the win "8" for real

    too bad

You act like this is Build 2011.  In other words, you are behind the times.

You can customize the main colors for Windows.  If you are looking for more than color, like glassy or reflective or gradient effects, then no.  Of course, apps can do it if they want, but that's up to the app designer.

    - why all the RGB basic colour palette? is there a - theme - for pastel or muted colors?  B&W

It isn't limited to RGB.  You most certainly can have pastels, muted colors, etc., and Windows 8.1 offers a larger selection.

    - can I run all of metro in a window - like media centre exactly.  I have used utils that did this - poorly

    No.  But check out http://www.stardock.com/products/modernmix/.

    - can I have metro on 4 monitors - but my main mon is desktop?

In Windows 8.1, modern apps can be displayed on multiple monitors.

I disagree, in a way.  I feel that Microsoft needs to push it harder by helping desktop app developers move into the modern UI.  As it stands, there are still 2 different worlds and I feel Microsoft is allowing desktop application developers to slip away.

I agree - and that is 2 years away

( I wish it was tomorrow - I wish I had even a beta of corel metro or photoshop metro - to see what that world would be like

I have the new office - the WHITE on WHITE office

pray you arnt over 40 with glasses using this - sort of metro - office

I changed the theme to silver - It helped.  I cant do the same in metro

it is all half baked - but great vision

ps - go to save a file in new office and its like going to the tablet interface in win8 - it is JARRING - simple as that

    2 worlds fighting

the desktop must WIN for now...

I watched that whole apple thingy broadcast - it was metro - done... a ...little... better but not by much (and the icons sucked) the whole world went - apple just copied Microsoft - ms was right all along - but what press did you get? only bad press... maybe one or 2 articles that actually honestly pointed this out

I feel bad for ms they are trying - they are doing good things - but its not working

a little love to the old stalwarts might help (believe it or not younglings)

    How" how you ask? (lol)

how about a new DESKTOP UI ... those stupid box taskbar icons look horrid - and there is nothing wrong with 3d. I saw a patent apple had on 3d space in UIs - I thought next apple os would be 3d - not like with glasses - but the desktop goes back - windows don't have just rudimentary shadows - but inter-act with a light source in a 3d space. I personally would love facebook and quakelive - combined (so I could kill Farmville posters haha)

im just saying - win7 rocked - the UI - meh - nice and boring - boxes on icons,,,  lots of room for change

    * might not be so bad - at this time -  to show the world - just what a DESKTOP can be

edit: lets let our UIs be 3d and immersive - while our content and apps may be flat - it is a nice juxtaposition. 2 much of either would be too much

    Hi Jamie. Smiley

In regards to things not working. They're going under massive changes, being bold, failing, listening, and responding. From what I hear from this year's Build, developers are especially excited now to be on the MS platform/stack. I'd say give it some time...they might just delight us.

I want corel metro... adobe metro... yesterday! Expressionless

    * all in a new desktop - 3d/light source DEPTH quakelive that is facebook 3d realm / mall / world of the future.

    Easy peasy Wink

Windows 9 (yes 9)  Free 3d glasses  * ok maybe it IS 3d

(I just meant depth before - you know for old users - who don't want to wear the glasses Wink

The desktop is dead - long live the desktop!

    ...be it dead or alive"

I'm not a lover of Metro-style ... why because it's hard on the eyesight, big blocks of plain colour are very hard to look at when they are bright colours and dull colours make a dull viewing experiencing.

The default colour scheme for Office 2013 is a perfect example, it's all white and difficult to use for long periods, the theme's just serve to take the edge off but new Office 2013 isn't nice to look at.

The added complication is the icon design, the similarities between 'Reply' and 'Reply to All' being point and case of bad design as they are too close and confusion is easily caused.

As for Surface, well it's only people that I know that work for Microsoft and Ian Smith (Irascian) that I know that have one so I'm not going to plan for Metro apps anytime soon.

    Jamie and Sabot:

the "metro" UI model is not quite what some folks think it is....

if you check the design style for Win 8 and Win Phone came from some of the style of Media Center and how it's UI was clean, simple and used no pop up windows to show new views.

so I would take a look at MC and XBOX and Win 8 and look at what they share and then look for designs that use the best of how they are styled, and keep in mind that folks tend to copy demo code and not try to make a real design.

    +1/Like/[whatever since C9 doesn't have this feature]

Metro isn't about using just 2 colors in an app.  It's about anti-skeuomorphism.
