Alcohol Free Options?

I'm a 4 time vet coming back this year after missing the last several years.

I've got my schedule booked up and I'm hoping to find some social events/gatherings that don't have alcohol served. I've been to enough of these to know how they go  Devil

I'm a gamer (360, table top, etc), movie nerd, etc and wonder if anyone was aware of activities that someone like me would feel comfortable in. For me, that means no alcohol served at all. I'm happy to organize my own if there's enough interest (I'm staying at the Wyndham). I didnt plan on bringing my 360 but I will if there's interested in some ad hoc LAN gaming. Or some table top RPGs and games (Carcassone, Catan, Puerto Rico, etc). I remember one year I went with a group of MCPs for carting - that was a lot of fun.

Food crawl would be fantastic. Or a run to the local comic book/FLGS.

Bottom line is I'm looking for fun things to do with people who are interested in having fun and not getting wasted in the process. Not that there's anything WRONG with that, its just not for me.

    Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Have you tried Meetup.com[1] (No, it's not a dating site)? You're able to contact the coordinator and ask them directly but what I have found is a surprising number of events in my local area that I never knew about before. http://www.meetup.com

I expect I'll be drug along to a few parties but have no interest in getting wasted either so I can agree there. Tagging along to some local game stores might be cool depending on what's around there. I'm an old school gamer from years back but have fallen out of it for years. The family is trying to get me into running Pathfinder so I'm slowly trying to motivate back into it.

I know Brad Huffman, either in the #theKrewe group on Facebook or @bradhuffman on Twitter, was inquiring awhile ago about if anyone wanted to get together and play Munchkin so you might hunt him down and organize something.

I can run a 4e game one night if you find enough folks interested Smiley, be a fun excursion!

I tossed a comment into theKrewe group on Facebook linking back to this string to see if anyone's interested in organizing something with you.

I'll bring Munchkin (and Zombie Munchkin), Ticket to Ride, and some other card games.  Never played D&D, but if someone could suffer through a newb, I'd be down.

Someone actually volunteering to DM? Hell yeah! LOL...

    Thanks Mike.

I'm open to anything and everything - I will be alone (the family couldn't make the trip from NC with me this year), and will have a lot of spare time to get my non-tech nerd on. Hoping to meet others willing to do the same.

I also posted in the Tech Ed FB timeline, so please look me up there and add me to your FB friends if you want to organize something!

I thought about picking up Legend of Drizzt. That supports 6 players, and I'll have played it enough solo to be a halfway non-horrible DM.

To go along with the sidetracking of this thread, I'd be up for some Magic: The Gathering. Never tried out D&D or Munchkin, but have always wanted to try the latter.

DM'ing a 4e essentials game is pretty easy if folks want to commit. Usually best to not run with more than 5 players otherwise things get rapidly out of control.

If there is enough interest as we get closer to tech ed can look into setting something up, probably for Wednesday night.

I'm in for the evening. As long as we are in a place that serves caffeinated beverages!

Also check out http://www.yelp.com/talk/new-orleans where you can post questions and get answers from local Yelpers living in NOLA

@Hometoy:The problem with Meetup is that is will not be geared towards TechEd attendees. While it would allow Tek to find things to do in NOLA, it would be with random people and not necessarily with other TechEd people.

I totally appreciate the suggestion, and this is exactly why I'm using this route.

The chances of being able to "talk shop" over a campaign go up exponentially knowing the people I play with actually work in "the shop"!

Here's a tip for you if you don't like to drink but still want to be social...

Tell the bartender you are the "designated driver"... free soda all night long Smiley

Then you can amuse yourself by watching others get wasted...

If you show up to #TheKrewe Monday Mixer (It has alcohol but is focused on Networking) If you can't get free soda I vow to pay for your soda during the event!
