The shuttles are pretty nice.  I'd prefer to be really close to the conference center.  But the shuttles run a lot and are a pretty nice setup.

At this point, it's going to be slim pickings if any for the downtown core or walking distance.  But, you just never know what may crop up with availability.  In terms of the shuttle buses, they are well organized and run very regularly.  The opportunity to network, make friends, and learn some stuff while catching a ride on these buses are priceless.

I have heard from colleagues that they had trouble using their cell phone for any type of communication at a tech conference because of the large use of cellular devices at the meeting. Any thoughts whether cell phone communication will have issues at the meeting?

@gtomes:I'm a heavy cell user and I dd not encounter any issues at TechEd 2013 in NOLA.  I didn't hear any complaints either.  Also, the WIFI coverage was fine with the thousands who were there.  The only occasional coverage issues I noticed were in the meal halls, but that was quite minor.

The last few years were pretty good for WiFi and cell.  2010 New Orleans killed the AT&T network for hours.  WiFi has improved in coverage of the center every year.  Haven't had any bad spots recently.  I know in Orlando 2012 I used more cell than WiFi because I had such good coverage on 4G with Verizon.

Yes, what hotels will have the shuttle service available? Is it just the ones listed on the TechEd site? Or will others have the service as well? Please let us know asap so we can get registered. Thanks so much.

I could be wrong, but I think all of the official hotels have shuttles if they are not considered to be walking distance. You should feel confident that you will have transportation to the convention center if you book a hotel through TechEd.

I was late to register and by the time I did, all of the downtown hotels were booked.  I picked the Royal Sonesta in the Galleria area. Recently renovated, good reviews and reasonable rate.  Check it out.

It looks like all the conference hotels are sold out.  Will more rooms be made available?

Man - hotels prices in Houston for Tech-Ed are pretty bad.  Can't find anything for under $300 a night.  I've been to the past 5 Tech-Ed's and haven't had this sort of issue before.  Thinking of skipping this one...

I usually try to get a room at a hotel near a conference hotel, but I have not been able to do so in Houston.  Thus, I have a room at a Red Roof Inn on I-10 east of downtown (about 10 miles away).  Since I'm driving in from Lubbock, I am going to use the Discovery Green garage for the main days of the conference as their rate is $12 a day flat (this is their "permanent" event parking fee).

If you have a car, this will open you up to a lot of possibility outside of the Loop, but Houston can be brutal if you don't leave for downtown early enough (no later than 7 AM or you may end up in stop-and-go traffic).  Also, with a car, if you're on the west side of town, consider parking at the Galleria Mall parking lot and catching a shuttle from one of those conference hotels there.
