Things to do in Houston

I see a lot of people concerned about things to do in Houston because it is not known as a party town. I am a Houston native and trust me there is much to do and MANY ways to get in trouble. We have 6 million people here and a ton of acreage, we have something for everyone. I'm going to throw out some suggestions and if anyone wants to know "Where can I do...?" Please reply.

    Near the conference:

    • Minute Maid park - Catch a baseball game
    • BBVA Compass Stadium - Catch a soccer game
    • Toyota Center - DJ Avicii will be here one night
    • Discovery Green - Always has events happening (mostly for free)
    • Houston Aquarium - also has a decent ferris wheel and open in the evening
    • Downtown underground tunnels - great shopping and just real cool
    • Take a tour of St Arnold Brewing Company
    • Lucky Strike Bowling - High end bowling experience

    Not too far:

    • Museum district - Tons of different museums for kids through nerds
    • Zoo
    • Herman park golf
    • Montrose area - You could spend a whole day there and not see all the cool stuff
    • Rice village - Great shopping and food too
    • The start of Westheimer - If you have your own car, drive down it and go west. It is over 15 miles long and if you are looking for anything you will eventually find it in one of these stores.
    • Galleria Mall - Another place that can take all day to explore w/ ice scating
    • Art district - see fine or or catch a ballet or broadway play

    Other:

    • Washington Ave. Where all the clubs are. There are bars and a few choice places elsewhere but here you will find a road full of them
    • NASA
    • Kemah Boardwalk - Its like a small theme park
    • Dave and Busters
    • Main Event Entertainment
    • Go Carts - High powered ones
    • Gun Ranges - So many and you can rent guns to shoot
    • Strip Clubs - no shortage of them here. Charles Barkley even says we have the best
    • Tons of bars

Im sure I left something out but if you need a suggestion on places to eat or trying to find if something exists in Houston feel free to PM me or respond to this thread.

@TechEd_NA posted this guide a few months back that has some great ideas and key places to check out! http://www.visithoustontexas.com/things-to-do/insiders-guide/  Having been to Houston many times, trust me the Downtown area and Galleria have plenty to do, you won't be disappointed!

Will there be any Baseball game in the weekend before TechEd  ?

@Duelund looks like the Astros are at the Orioles the weekend prior to TechEd.  However, they play at home vs. the Rangers at 7:10 May 12-14, maybe you can catch one of those games?

How far is the Space Center from the Convention Center?

@CanadaPaul: Space Center is 24 miles from the Convention Center. 37 minutes with traffic.

@DBegley:Do you know those specifics for any logistical reasons?  For the last day of the conference perhaps?!?  :)

I am originally from Houston but live in DC now but have a few more suggestions for things to do and will be posting a Map with the food you have to eat soon:

About a block from Minute Maid Park is a great place called Joystix. It is an arcade and a bar. Look it up!! They have amazing amount of games. The bar is a little over priced but well worth going just to play some classic games with a few beers.

I was going to also recommend the Flying saucer on Main@Capitol. Flying Saucer has been known for their pies for a long time and they are now branching out. You will be hard pressed to find another bar downtown with the beer selection available here.

    Will write more soon.

@ChrisW: Not logistics but video production. Have you not seen @RicksterCDN and @Joey Snow at the Houston Space Center for their Countdown Show re: Things Not to Miss in Houston?  We presented the best places to visit and I have to say it was an adventure with those two!!!

@mmiller0617: Totally agree!  Lots of great craft beer locations in Houston. The Flying Saucer was a great place to visit!  Check out our visit to Flying Saucer visit during our other Houston Countdown Show!

They are away the week before, but there are games vs the rangers on Mon, Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 7:10. I'm willing to look into a group booking if anyone is interested.

I'm very interested in going to one of the Astros games too. Good seats will still be available.

Breaking my TechEd duck this year. Looking forward to it.

Single game tickets go on sale next Monday (03/03). Am probably going to try for the Wednesday night game.

We arrive on the Saturday, so will be looking for something to do on the Sunday (after conference registration). Am thinking that as it will probably be my first and last visit to Houston, I must get to see the Space Centre.

I already have sopken with group sales and they are going to provide us with a link to purchase seats in various levels at group rates. Will provide more info once I have it.

Be advised I have told them this is not a TechEd or Microsoft sanctioned event. Just a bunch of conference attendees who want to catch a game.

@DBegley: Do you have the ability to promote this further?
