I think that Outlook Express that comes with XP is not a multithreaded application, because when ever I fire it up and It checks for emails, it gives me an hour glass, and the UI gets white and kinda non responsive. Is this true? and if so why did they not make it a multitheaded app?

An unresponsive UI doesn't mean a program isn't multithreaded.

And an hourglass icon over a window's client area doesn't mean Windows think's its locked up either, but since it turns white as you described, then yeah, that's a case of the program not re-painting its client area.
