Optimizing Windows 7 folder

    How and when does Windows explorer decide to change how a folder will be optimized. I had a 100GB movie folder that was opening up very slowly and after some trial and error came upon this option that had been changed to Video for "optimize this folder for" from I'm guessing the General default setting. I changed it back to general and now the folder opens up almost instantly.

    @rodneyMc: I'm guessing that has something to do with if/how it will show thumbnails. Creating the thumbnails for your 100GBs of video probably slowed it down. As far as I know, that setting is just for the appearance of the folder in the UI and doesn't actually perform any performance optimizations.

    It still shows in thumbnail view and the folder is set to optimize for general setting. I just booted up about fifteen minutes ago and opened the folder which was slow to open in thumbnail view. Closed out and then opened it again which opened up instantly?

    @rodneyMc: From Paul Thurrott:

    "This dates back to Windows XP and it's mostly designed to optimize how the folder items look (i.e. the icon type), based on the content the folder contains. If this isn't set explicitly, Windows will examine the contents of the folder and try to display the items in a way that makes sense. I suppose any performance benefit could be tied to the fact that Windows is no longer examining the folder contents."

    That must have been the reason XP couldn't hold a folder view setting and it always defaulted back to detail. I believe 400 was the magic number with that mess. Thanks Paul.
