What is the official Microsoft-recommended approach to convert Word documents to PDF documents from a server as part of an automated workflow?

I shudder to suggest this, but you _can_ use word and the office API to do this.

@blowdart: I would try it, being a Microsoft bod you always consider scalability. I'd try this,if it becomes unstable due to server load tell your boss to get his wallet out for Aspose, make sure he is sitting down when you read the licensing

@exoteric:Workflow + Automatic convertion of Office documents to PDF format = MOSS

Of course, SharePoint could be a bit expensive, but at least it's officially supported way. Tongue Out
