Description

This is Behind the Code’s pilot episode with Core File Services architect, Mark Zbikowski. Mark began his career at Microsoft in 1981, working on DOS 1.0 as a designer, coder and liaison with IBM. His quarter century long career has included significant involvement in OS/2, Cairo’s Object File System (OFS), and the NT File System (NTFS). In addition, he has been a key player in all of Microsoft’s File System work. Former Microsoft software architect Pat Helland interviews Mark about the early days at Microsoft, his passion for product development and the challenges of producing software.

Use FlashGet: Right click on the "Full screen" button. Click on "Download using FlashGet" and have fun (tested in IE). Downloads wonderful.

And I guess Charles won't mind, if we download the video.

I'm going to watch this video while traveling home tomorrow. I have been watching another Behind the Code with Andrews Heijlsberg a few months ago. That was very nice and interesting. Let's see how this is.

Ever wonder why the fiirst two bytes in a .exe are 'MZ' in ASCII.

Mark worked on the DOS loader and this legacy lives on in Portable Executable images today!

    brilliant video; very inspirational fellow

Is that video a few years old now though? ie, would this not be Marks 26th year?

Would it be possible to follow up with Mark with a C9 interview about his recent contributions, I am sure anyone who watches this video would find it facinating to know what he's up to and if/what he is contributing to Vista.

On another note, is WinFX sort of like OFS? Did he have any part in WinFX... (hope that doesnt go the same way as OFS Wink

    thanks guys

Yes, we will continue to release Behind the Code on C9. Our next release is slated (at this time) for August.

    Thanks for watching!

Two thumbs up, I love the concept of this show and hope to see more.  I love to hear stories of how Dos/Windows came to be from the people who made it.

Maybe oneday we'll get Bill Hill, he's always interesting to hear from.

Man, what passion Mr. Zbikowski has in his work! I'd like to be like him someday.

    Kudos Mr. Zbikowski.

You certainly will not be forgotten.

Mr. Zbikowski has a great legacy with the signature mark of the .exe

I'd like to be as successful as Mark at Microsoft. However, the interview leaves me wondering if he received all the credit he deserves. Cairo became an albatros project and Mark got punished for his dedication. Also, I'm surprised he is not in a higher position at Microsoft.

    Hello!

    http://minimsft.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_minimsft_archive.html

Another exit I didn't notice: Mark Zbikowski (MarkZ) has left
Microsoft, too, as of June 9th, according to Wikipedia. People
here in the comments noticed him missing from the GAL.
Dynamic references to NTDEV\MarkZ have started 404'ing
inside. Hmm... maybe our mini-mizing has finally started...
in a silent, scary, horror-movie sort of way.

Just getting around to viewing - a bit longer than I can sit....Would it be possible to make it downloadable?  I notice that "Download" is not currently one of the avail options where it is for most other vids.

Great interview, great interviewer, great technical quality.

    Thanks.

Where is this video?  The URL seems to no longer be valid, and search of C9 has turned up no alternate source.  Where can we get our hands on this?
