It is an honor and privilege to welcome to the show Niko Neugebauer, a Data Platform MVP from Portugal who was in town for the Microsoft MVP Summit, and we were lucky enough to get him into the Data Exposed studio to show off the Columnstore Indexes Scripts Library (CISL) that he has created.
Niko begins by giving us an overview of Columnstore Indexes and how they work beginning at the [02:10] mark. Introduced in SQL Server 2012, Columnstore Indexes dives into the properties and inner workings on how the Columnstore technology works, and how Columnstore compares to how data is stored via row store.
In this discussion Niko provides some insight into how the Columnstore technology and architecture has changed and improved in both SQL Server 2014 and SQL Server 2016.
At the [15:15] mark Niko introduces us to the CISL (Columnstore Indexes Scripts Library), a set of scripts that allows you to easily work with the Clustered Columnstore technology in SQL Server 2012, 2014, 2016, and Azure SQL Database!
Niko spends a good 20 minutes walking us through this awesome library, the scripts, and how to use this library to make working with Columnstore much easier. Niko also shows us where to download the library from GitHub and explains that people are free to contribute! AWESOME!
Great video, and we look forward to having Niko back!
