This week on IWP, we talk to the man with the plan, Microsoft's own Steve Bell.

When you submit a Windows Phone application to publish, we run it through a certification process in order to ensure that it meets minimum quality and content requirements, to ensure a great end user experience.

For more information on the certification process, please check out the following resources:

You are killing Windows Phone with all this certification nonsense. The walled-garden approach is the Apple way.

@Mark Rogers:i understand where you are coming from; certification does have its costs for the developer.

For us, though there are two sides. (1) It's about providing end users some reasonable expectation of a certain level of quality, and (2) when users have a reasonable expectation of a certain level of quality, we think they are more likely to download and purchase apps, which is better for developers.

We don't want to impact developers though. We're trying to walk a middle line; providing users some reasonable expectation of a certain level of quality, BUT ALSO giving developers very clear guidance and transparency into the process, and making the process as seamless and quick as possible.

These are our goals; we're working very hard to drive to a process that is as painless as possible.
