hi, I'm currently running windows server 2012 R2 with essentials role installed. I'm looking to move the role onto a new server running WS2016 Standard and move the essentials role onto there. Can you recommend any resources to support this please?

It's just my opinion, but...interesting to watch two one eyed MS propeller heads discuss the issues that don't interest most of my customers. MS has dropped SBS because (1)it wasn't capable of designing a mail server that was not ridiculously resource hungry; and (2) it suited its purposes to ram "The Cloud" down our throats because they can make so much more $$ out of it. My customers don't want Office 365 (just like they don't want Google owning their documents): they want their word processor, spreadsheet app etc. installed locally. And anything more than a dozen Exchange in the cloud mailboxes becomes too expensive for their purposes. The sooner an organisation like Micro Focus cashes in on Microsoft's erroneous belief that it always knows better than the customer and releases a real competitor small business product, the sooner many of us will be happy.

I have been using the "essentials" version of Windows Server since way back... does anybody remember Windows Home Server?. These products have always had the ability to provide media streaming services. That is until Server 2016 Essentials. If Server 2016 Essentials has this same ability, I can't find any documentation on how to enable it.

With Server 2012 R2 Essentials, you had to down load the "Windows Essentials Media Pack" and install that before you could enable Media streaming services via the dash board. Unfortunately, that version does not install or work on Server 2016 Essentials.

I want to get on board with Server 2016 Essentials, but if I can't have or enable the Media Streaming features that were available in earlier versions, then I can't and won't use the new operating system

This video is saying that Windows Server Essentials, is not needed.
How does SBS ties in to Essentials, it does not, Essentials is a way to kill SBS for good.
if you have 50 users or less, just get Office365-F1, or better get Microsoft365-F1,
you don't need a server then period, just an internet access.

    This is what Microsoft wants.

On the other hand if you need Local AD, for all your 200 windows 10 desktop, and don't what to have anything to do with microsoft cloud, Azure or office365.
Then ask if you can run it as a AD, File Server, etc... only.
But i think there are free alternative out their.
