Using diskless compute nodes provides many advantages, including improved reliability, reduced cost, and greater security. HPC Server 2008 R2 beta1 allows clusters to boot over the network, allowing nodes to be diskless. This video describes how technologies such as iSCSI and DHCP are used to accomplish this, and shows a demo of how to create a base image and boot nodes from it.
