• Can someone mention this in the next episode:

Redgate are now charging for well known "free" tool ".Net Reflector". Redgate is saying it is going to be charging $35 starting end of February 2011.

In my opinion this totally the wrong thing to do - it should always stay free. This is a great injustice to the .Net community as Lutz Roeder (Microsoft) always made this free, and so many people use this for work and education. As Java has free decompilers, why not keep this free for .Net?

Does anyone know any good alternatives? Or any chance in getting Microsoft to own/support this (or develop their own)?

• The background of your studio looks nice, but your green screen works is really bad. It looks almost a little but funny.

• BasBas It finds lightbulbs.

I love the playback speed feature. Excellent.

• The edges of your faces etc. where pretty bad looking. It looked like over aggresive green screen masking.

The green of the background was also reflecting on your faces allot, especially Brian because of the direction he was facing.

Since I'm giving neative comments anyway Smiley
Lately the Smoothstream has been taking forever to change form blocky to high quality. It used to only take a few seconds but now it looks like it can take up to a minute or more, especially when I'm in fullscreen.
I have a very fast connection and can actually just click on the high quality .WMV and stream it in WMP so I can handle to HQ Silverlight stream just fine.

• Dan FernandezDan

@KeepReflectorFree: It's a good point for discussion and Miguel had hinted at some stuff on his blog too, we'll discuss next week.

• Dan FernandezDan

@Rodney McKay: @dentaku: Thanks guys for the green screen feedback, I've sent it to Larry and Michael to see how we can fix this Smiley

@dentaku - I've sent your smooth streaming feedback to Duncan too

• Now if only the CRTC would listen to the people the way you guys do Smiley

• supadupasupadupa

The background reminds me of The Soup on the E! channel. Maybe you guys need to be a bit closer to the camera to avoid the problem with the green screen?

• supadupasupadupa

Last comment was made while downloading, now I've watched the first few minutes, isn't there something wrong with the sound, too? I'm watching the HQ WMV and it sounds like the audio is really low bitrate, but the reported bitrate is higher than last week's show. So pretty much epic fail this week, guys, sorry. :)

• Dan FernandezDan

@supadupa: Ack, sorry Sad , I'll forward your comment on to our studio guys

• i don't think you need this fancy studio at all. sit on a sofa somewhere in your office or in the lobby and it is fine for me. I think i would like it even more this way.

• C MageeC Magee

The new streaming video is really unclear and vastly inferior to the previous streaming. I can only look at the video in reduced dimension. Full screen is a mess. Get it right!!

• Dan FernandezDan

@C Magee: Apologies for that, do you know if you're using Silverlight or the HTML 5 video player? That will help us diagnose what the issue is. One thing to keep in mind is that full screen takes a few seconds to get up to the highest quality. It shouldn't take more than 30 seconds max though

• Dan FernandezDan

Doh - Duplicate

• Duncan MackenzieDuncanma "yeah that's awful close, but that's not why I'm so hard done by"

@dentaku: Any chance you could run a little test for us Dentaku?

Go to http://smf.cloudapp.net/healthmonitor, then put this URL into the 'Stream URL' field: http://files.ch9.ms/ch9/3673/3c19b5ac-68d7-4270-a265-9e86001c3673/TWC9Feb102011.ism/manifest

this should show you exactly what bandwidth you are getting, when it steps up to high quality, etc...

• Duncan MackenzieDuncanma "yeah that's awful close, but that's not why I'm so hard done by"

@C Magee: Any chance you could also follow the debugging steps I've outlined for dentaku and let us know the results?

• Hmm. Tonight it's kinda Up and Down more than normal.

If I play the video in a window it will jump up to full quality within 5sec or so but if I go to fullscreen it drops down to 1 bar and I just tried it again and it took 55sec to get to FULL BARS then it started going down and up again.

When I tried the health monitor it jumped up to full quality much much faster for some reason but it went up and down allot. It WAS running in a window though.

Later.... I just tried the healthmonitor again and it worked very well. It was more like the experience I remember from watching the Olympics in HD on ctv.ca last winter.

Like I've noticed already, it just works much better windowed than fullscreen.
Here's a .JPG and some logs of the healthmonitor (I  doubt you can make use of the logs but I'm giving them to you just in case)
http://www.box.net/shared/x2gk05rmmf

The .JPG shows it working very well and really quick.
Log 1 is when it went up in quality very fast but the started going down and up after that.
Log 2 is the log of the good test that's in the screenshot.

• Thanks for the mvcConf shoutout - and for all the great support in Channel 9 studios!

By the way - all sessions, including the Live Meeting sessions, are being posted on Channel 9. I think all but a couple are already live by now at the link you posted - http://channel9.msdn.com/Series/mvcConf

@Dan:Using latest Silverlight. Why waste 30 seconds? The image and sound are fine when using High Quality WMV.

• @Conway Magee:Yup, I can just click o the HQ WMV an it buffers for a few seconds then plays in WMP and it's perfectly clear.

I've experimented and it works very well in a tiny window but fullscreen it's horrible. Of course this doesn't explain the warbly (overcompressed) audio that this particular video has. TWC9 usually sounds fine.

Nice to see how Windows Phone 7 tiles work. Looks like a really good application and easy to use. Might make orderingfood hampers
      easier for me.
