This Week on C9: Random Musings of Jeff and Charles

Download

Right click “Save as…”

This week on Channel 9, Dan and Brian aren't on This Week on Channel 9. No, ladies and gentlemen, not this week. Dan is writing a new version of Visual Studio for Linux and Brian is still trying to get TFS running on TimeWarp OS.

This week, Charles and Jeff, two of C9's founding members, but more importantly, two long time curmudgeons with stories to tell randomize Dan and Brian's great geek show with, well, whatever comes to mind. Yeah, OldSchoolRandom rules in this episode. No links. No links to links. No links to links to links. Just Charles and Jeff talking. No slides. No slides of slides and no slides of slides of slides.

Talking about the old archive stuff I remember recording stuff off satelite back in the last Century.  I recall listening to Steve Balmer talking about Web Services allowing any tech to interface with any tech -What? I didn't believe it and booked up for PDC2000 to find out more.

So it would be great if you could find some of the pre-channel 9 stuff and show it in the CH9 history channell!

Also there should be a definitive archive of all those Gates/Balmer funnies.

J: I'll tell you, the other day some coder came up to me and ..

    C: What, Erik Meijer?

J: No, No, I don't know who it was, and he said, "You Code?"

    C: Yeah

J: I said, "What?" he said, "You code?"

C: Yeah. And you replied, "You forking code?"

J: He come back. He sayss-, he said, "You forking c-?" I said, "You f-, I said, "You forking code?".

C: I should hope s, "you forking code"

J: I s-,I said, "You forking code?", I said, "You forking code here, and call me a forking code.".

    C: I should say so.

J: I said,"You f-". I said. "You code". I said. "You forking code". I said. "Who you forking calling 'can't' code?"

C: Yeah, what did he say, code?

J: He said. "You forking code!"

C: Well, you forking code, who are you to say to him that he was a forking code?

J: Well, what d'you fo-, what d'you forking think, mate, I forking de-, defending my forking self, weren't I?

C: Well, no, he come up to you, call you "code", ...

    J: Yeah!

C: ... that's fair enough, what he said, "you forking code",and you said back to him. "you forking forking code."

    J: I sa-, well, ...

C: Well, whayt tdo you expect him to say back apart from, "You forking stupid forking code!"

    J: Well, I don', I don't expect nothing, do I?

    C: No

J: But the f-, the code come back with, "you forking code?", code.

I feel that Channel9 website need to be windows phone 7 friendly. It is still very hard to nevigate with wp7 on channel9.

  • oh come on, visual studio for linux, how could anyone buy that, microsoft doesn't do anything for free, even the src they have released for linux was to earn more money.
  • Clint RutkasClint I'm a "developer"

    @Mr Crash:

Few off top of my head

Plus don't forget about Dreamspark, BizSpark, and WebSpark.  Plus the open source projects like Orchard and ASP.Net MVC ...

  • @Clint:
It's called marketing tactics, like drug-pimps, they give you a free taste of the goodness and when you want more well then you have to pay for it.

In the license / eula it say something like: you can't use it to make money. (only for personal use)
To me that is not free.

I don't know of those open source projects (i'm not a web developer) but i can guess they have a commertial version with more features and more support right ?
So just yet another way for them to lure you in.

    • Bing ? it's not a program, its a very crapy clone copy of googles search engine.
    • Skydrive is useless (buggy, slow download/upload speed, reads the uploaded content "virus scanning", right... ) like hotmail but for files
    • Windows Live  Essentials - Most programs (i have not tried all) in that package are crap, i could list all the things they do plain wrong but its a waste since they wont fix it Sad

Most of the items in that list i have not used myself so i can't comment on them.
But i can say that there are probably far better alternatives out there, that are free, open source and not made with an economical motive behind it.

I could go on but it would be a boring read and it wont change anything.

I would love to help microsoft fix those progarms but they are just not interested. ( Why waste money and time on the pseudo-free sample products, right ? )

I love to fix things, if i only had access to the source code,  a depressed-yearning-sigh

    NO. http://www.microsoft.com/express/Support/Support-faq.aspx

Can I use Express Editions for commercial use?

Yes, there are no licensing restrictions for applications built using Visual Studio Express Editions.

    NO.

  • I really like the IMDB idea for CH9 so you have my vote for that.

Ah thats interesting, guess they changed it...or i mixed it up with some other product
Still that version is very limited and not portable...nor does it support linux and cant be run on linux so windows is needed, it can't compile stuff that will on on linux either btw...

    Open source projects:
Mhh your going to make me work for it eh ?

Ok, Both Orcharduses and ASP.Net MVC use .NET so .NET is required and i can't find any info on their sites about it running on linux .NET version so ergo you have to buy windows to run it.

I'm to lazy to look in to it but can you compile these projects on linux ?

Seems like both projects use visual studio 2010 and the express version might lack the needed stuff ( if i remember correctly ) so you have to buy a  visual studio version too.

So do you see where i'm going here ?
Do you see the pattern ?
There is always something you have to buy to be able to use the "free" stuff.

It's like giving away free beer but you have to buy a beer glass to get the free beer.

@Mr Crash: Visual Studio Express can be used for commercial.  Windows Live Writer is amazing for doing blog posts and is free.  I'm just attempting to be helpful here so by saying something is buggy or crappy isn't helpful feedback.  Providing bugs and what makes something hard to use is helpful feedback with reproducible steps.

For Linux, not sure but I know Mono has a pretty strong following and they are pretty good about getting stuff to run on it.

I just provided a few open source projects that happened to be web-based.
