Getting to the point with PointStreamer
- Posted: Jan 31, 2013 at 6:00AM
Todays beta project is great example of how the Kinect for Windows device is changing the face of video, of putting the real in 3D...
What is PointStreamer?
PointStreamer is a Kinect application that lets you capture, edit, and share 3D videos, or PointStreams. These are not just fixed point-of-view 3D videos like you would see in a movie theater today -- they contain real 3D information that lets you get a new perspective on that moment in time. You can capture a PointStream with Kinect and then fly a virtual camera through the scene as it plays back.
3D PointStreams are more real than regular 2D video. They let you step into a moment and relive it. You can see a point in time and space from a new point of view. You don't have to worry about camera angles anymore. As long as you get the subject in frame, you can figure out the best way to present the subject later, during the editing process.
What do you need to record PointStreams?
It's easy -- all you need is the PointStreamer app, a Kinect for Windows sensor, and a computer running Windows 7 or Windows 8.
How do you get PointStreamer?
The potential for PointStreamer and 3D video is huge and we're just getting started. We've released a free beta version for you to download and try out. All you need to do is sign up for the beta.
The beta does not have all of the features that will be in the final version, but we want to get your feedback and learn how you want to use PointStreamer.
PointStreamer Beta Features
PointStreamer Beta is only the beginning! Here is a list of all the features you can try out today:
- Record the Kinect's raw depth, RGB, and audio data plus skeleton tracking data
- Save the recording in the compressed PointStreamer format
- Play back PointStreams and view them as a 3D rendering from any angle using a virtual camera
- Move the virtual camera around in 3D as you watch recordings
- Apply effects such as depth of field, background removal, and rendering style
What's missing? Let us know!
If you're a developer and you want to take advantage of some of the capabilities that PointStreamer has, contact support to ask about how to get access to the PointStreamer SDK. The PointStreamer SDK lets you integrate the capture, processing, and rendering features of PointStreamer into your own application and experience.
