For the last 5 years, I've run a little online data breach notification service known as Have I Been Pwned. Well, it was little and then before I knew it there were 5 billion records in there and millions of people dropping by on a good day. So how do you run a pet project of that scale without blowing the budget? By pwning your cloud costs! In this talk, I'm going to share how I've managed to keep the cost of running a popular website with a heap of data down to a mere coffee budget number. I'll talk about the architecture I originally employed, where it worked, where it didn't and what I've done over the years to actually decrease the cost as its grown ever larger. It's a real world, hands-on look at how to build for scale on a shoestring.
