Description

The boys at Coding4Fun really out-did themselves this time. They created Kinect-Driven Pneumatic Boxing Robots and showed them off to the party-goers at last nights opening party for the SXSW Interactive track, host by Frog and Microsoft. Essentially 2 humans each use their own Kinect to control the boxing bots inside the ring. The crowd LOVED this party centerpiece and I must say I want a bot of my very own.       Wow you're pretty shallow and near sighted.
      This is pretty cool. They only had a month and a half to do this from scratch. Give them a year and I bet it'll be totally different.
      The idea that we can control hardware via motion, simply awesome.

      I see huge potential. Not necessarily boxing, but many other things.

      I see how much cooler you think you are than everybody else, but you really just sound like a self-absorbed *.

      Seems like this violates the Law of Robotics about self preservation though. The kill switch was a wise idea  in case they attempt an overthrow.

      @dtower: the punching was designed to be fast but not powerful. While I did joke safety third, the motor controllers have a kill switch, we have ref mode, the tanks have pressure relief valves so they can't be over-filled, all the gauges and electronics are in "safe" areas where they can't get hit or driven into.  The bases are basically tanks.  4 hours of people slamming them into one another and they only have a few scratches Smiley

      @bystander:  Rick did the UX and some kinect stuff.  Brian Peek did the networking stack / kinect stuff. 

      You have to remember, the two robots were built in 1 month with 3 guys working on the entire project with other things that had to get done on top of the robots.  Lots of wiring, lots of figuring out stuff on the fly, lots of "how are we going to make this rock solid".

      When doing projects like this, we have multiple considerations like cost of parts, durability of parts, can we program said part on the fly, can we get the part in time, how hard is it to hot swap the part, ... 

      Remember, we basically had a demolition derby going on.  Everything had to be extremely industrial and rock solid.
